Steve Jobs is going to fly all the way to France to talk about education?
The education buying season is over. Teachers and Board of Ed. members will be sleeping when Jobs is on the stage.

Back to what Wry Crooter was saying...Another problem with switching to indesign, other than printing, is work flow. Part of the reason why so many people in publishing (at least in magazines) are still using Quark is because of QPS and Copy desk. Until Adobe comes up with something that's as realiable (ha) as the system quark has there'll be no mass movement to switch. In fact the co. that I'm working for now, was a test subject. One which failed. Most large publishers would love to make the transition to indesign as Adobe offers site licensing, where Quark doesn't. To sum up Indesign is great if your designing at home or have a small staff. It's the better program. But if your trying to produce say a magazine, chances are you won't be using Indesign anytime soon

That's pretty cool news. Fedora's the free one, right? Does this mean we can dual boot with it and OSX?

I can understand how long people have been using Quark for.. but damn.. in a span of 2 years, with no real training, I have just about mastered Quark AND InDesign, by myself. I by no means call myself a master, or pro at either program, but I think I'm pretty damn good with both of them. Same with Photoshop, but I have been using that since v2.5 (pre layers era  )
But.. want to talk about tough?
Pretty much the same as powermac666 EXCEPT,
I am the only pre-press person. We have 2 Macs and a PC in my office. I have nobody to talk to about problems or issues, I rely on Google and Adobe forums. We take ANYTHING as well (small print shop - we have to). People all the time saying "well, I designed it in "Print Shop"" and I have to explain that thats not a professional program and we dont have it. I then have to direct them to download PrimoPDF so they can PDF thier stuff without having to pay $400 for Acrobat.
I send PDF's to everybody. When companies ask for EPS or TIFF or whatever, I send a PDF anyway.
Unfortunately, most of the stuff we get in from customers is not professional quality, or built in a professional printing program such as Quark or InDesign. So, I pretty much try to force them to send me PDF's which means getting PrimoPDF and using that. It seems to help.

It always makes my day when I stump a Mac employee. I feel like when you stump one, you should get their job. That would make for the best Apple employees. All the time.
-Apple guy: "24 tracks?"
-Me: "No, 48. Have your locker cleaned out by the end of the week."
kind of like killing the supreme chancellor of the klingon empire gives you the job of supreme chancellor?

it's more interesting than hilarious
Yeah, I typed that fast. What I mean by hilarious is some of the stuff you find -- not the site itself.
Here's what they say about iPod shortly after it came out in November 2001...
"Presenting iPod. The first MP3 player to pack a mind-blowing 1,000 songs..."
And they go on...
"The iPod has a large, high-quality liquid crystal display (LCD) for viewing up to six lines of text."
It's amazing to think about how much has changed in just 4 and a half years.

Thanks! Didn't think about clock()!
Though, that gives me 100.8 seconds (assuming 10.08 seconds) when it ran in 10 seconds. Didn't you mean to divide by ten?

Both browsers have their advantages. Firefox seems to be more compatible in general; that doesn't mean there aren't any sites that look fine in Safari but not in Firefox (ATI's page (http://www.ati.com/), of all things, was one of them - I don't know if it still is).
I like Safari's bookmarks system. Most browsers (including MSIE) have a two-tier bookmark system. Frequently used bookmarks go in the bookmarks bar; less often used bookmarks are in the bookmarks menu. Safari's is three-tier: bookmarks bar, bookmarks menu, bookmark collections screen (for stuff you don't use often enough to put in the bookmarks menu, but that you still want to have around). Another advantage to Safari (at least for .Mac members) is the bookmark synchronization with .Mac - no other browser on any platform that I know of does this.

It was only right. It's a shame that he joined the team and brought such shame to us.
Here I disagree. This guy had access to a lot of computers and therefore wrote a little app to install folding on all of his hundreds of machines located all over the USA. That this app somehow became a virus is a different story. I, for one, am still proud of this guy, his intentions where/are good. When he noticed that something went wrong he contacted Stanford about it. I only hope that he still folds with us!

Ok, so reimplementing the MacOS Toolbox (even if it's now called "Carbon") on yet another platform is no big task?

Personally, as long as OS X runs on it and Final Cut Pro renders my video fast, I could care less what CPU is in the box.

Is it just me, or had ThinkSecret just about shriveled up and died since Apple went after them (and probably eliminated all of their confidential sources, too)..
I mean remember when we used to get artists renderings of Cinema Displays before they were relaesed and they ended up being accurate? iMac release right on the nose...
Now they cant even get the MacBook release straight...

i use firefox after i had all sorts of safari problems, not connecting to any sites.
safari works fine now but i'm used to firefix with all my extentions now. the only thing that i miss is spell check in text but i guess that only promotes laziness anyway.
safari isn't a bad browser and firefox has its quirks too but i'm happy this way.
