It was the only RPG i have ever played. I thought it was a great game, just wish i had bought it for the SNES while it was still for sale a retail stores. I can't really justify spending $50 on a used SNES cartridge. Hopefully it will come out for the virtual console.

    Thanks

No, the pro is faster than the regular 9000... that is the video processor is clocked higher, the memory is faster also.

The 9000 IS slighly slower than the 8500. The 9000 is replacing the 8500 mainly because it is less expensive for ATI to manufacture. In marketing terms, the 9000 is actually replacing the 7500 not the 8500 (it will be the new low end gaming card)

You are also mistaken about the 8500 on the Mac. The 8500 wasn't a BTO option on the Tower. It was GF4mx, ATI 7500, GF4.

When you copy something, you're not taking it. The original is still there.

Ooooooohhh... so I'm all turned around on this whole P2P thing.

It's a different economy. Many people are obviously quite content to work building the players.

Slightly misleading. They may only be 'content' to work building the players to the extent that their only alternative to taking such work is to starve. People in the forced labour camps of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were content to work as slaves to the extent they their only alternative was to get shot.

Apple made it clear last year in August that they were not going to have any new hardware at the Paris Expo (2001). They most likely will do the same again this year.

BTW, when is the expo? Seriously...

If there isn't going to be new hardware, then, ladies and gentlemen, let's take a look at the software department. There is the possibility of iCal and iSync to follow up to iPod OS 1.2 and Jaguar, along with the possibility of an iMovie/FCP update. I would pay close attention to a possible iPhoto 2 at Paris, though, as I think it will provide the option to load specific pics, instead of just dumping everything on your camera onto your computer.

Until we see what happens with the powermac I can see no reason to expect a huge increase in speed in the imac.

How can apple release an imac higher than 1 ghz until they have at least bumped the PM line up to 1 ghz dual low end?

    1) Macs don't use shared libraries? You must be using System 6. For the folks who aren't familiar with the concept of the shared library (what Microsoft calls a dynamic link library) simply put shared libs are object orientated pieces of code containing functions/methods and other objects that can be invoked upon from other code. Mac OS X being highly object orientated relies almost exclusively on shared libraries. In the modern world of software engineering we rarely find it necessary to statically build an executable. If you look back at OS 7/8/9, while not as much as 10, developers could take advantage of off the shelf code. (eg, sprockets, mp lib, etc). Also you are not accurate in saying OS X is a 25 year old archiecture.

1.5) Microsoft OS's that use versions of the Windows 2000 kernel (2000 itself and XP) just like Mach, have a hardware abstraction layer. The "DLL Hell" days (Windows ME and below) are over. This is no longer an issue with the new kernel. The fact of the matter is that my P4 2.8 machine running XP is equally as stable as my PowerBook G4 800 running Mac OS X. I have not *ONCE* had either one core dump or "blue screen". Sure programs screw up, and when they do, they die, not the OS. Both OS's are very mature.

2.) I have *literally* put my PC up against my PowerBook, and the PowerBook fails miserably. I've wrote a simple stopwatch Java application that iterate through floating point instructions, and if I my PC finished 2.5 times faster than the PowerBook. If you want more details (hell I'll even give you the code) of my app, I'll be glad to share it with the community. Playing/decoding MP3's faster on the Mac? No way in hell. Winamp uses 0-1% CPU, iTunes consumes 8-12%.

3.) You speak of flaws of the "x86 architecture" but do not provide us specifics as to why you say this. The x86 processor began in the late 70's when Intel first offered the 8086 as a CISC successor to it's 4004 line of processors. Many, many things have changed over the course of 20 years. Had they sit still (like the G4/motorola chip) intel wouldn't be selling products today, now would they? The G4 is not much more than an improved G3 series processor with vector processing instructions. Be honest (especially be honest to yourself!) if you look back and compare the G3/G4, you do see improvements, but not drastic improvements. More clock, the maxbus protocol (debatable), and more cache. One of the reasons why you see Apple adding cache like mad to it's recent products is because they are in between a rock and hard place with this Motorola chip. This is exactly the same approach AMD took with their failing processor, the K5/K6. I want you to contrast this to a P4 with an i850e chipset: Insanely high clock speeds, a 533mhz bus, fast memory with RIMMs @ 4.2GB/s, with a next stop of 9.6GB/s -- to MaxBus. You will soon see why the current generation of PowerPC processors is "inferior", dare I say it.

For the most part I think its fare to say that the current Macintosh hardware performance is status-quo. The current best of breed of Macintoshes are slower than the current best of bread PCs. Macs are slower - just accept it. I dont like it any more than you do.

my pc with xp pro ed did crash a few times and it does.
on the other hand , my macs with os x do not

Personally I don't think Apple can refresh their LCD lineup soon enough.

I think the current displays are an ergonomic nightmare. Where are the VESA brackets and arsm (they could even sell an iMac like arm that attaches to the table or wall!)

I -will not- buy one of those monitors until they completely re-design them (have to stick with my 19" CRT in the meanwhile :-(

Plus an more entry level widescreen LCD is another great product waiting to happen.

The site's down now. Pressure from Apple? From Google higher-ups? It irks me that it's gone.

For those who missed it and want to see it in action, I saved a movie for my brother. It just shows how inept I am at moving a mouse with a trackball (didn't plan on a larger audience), but it does show what the site looked like. Click on the pic to download the movie.

    But the PS3 is a computer ;)

I had to...sorry,it just fit so well. There just wasn't a spot like this in the war thread

It clocks in at about a 1.8Ghz G5 from linux benchmarks, so pretty cool. :)

If only it could legally run OS X, than it would be an awesome investment, but Linux... :o

I have added a couple of more MacBooks to the group.
The portables seem to run at full fan speed whe the SMP client is running.
I have seem to be getting about 6 to 7 percent failure to complete a unit but to date all of my 9 machines seem to be able to run the units and other applications.
I haven't had any of the issues that trainguy77 has described.

But my comment still applies - why not use PNG.
Ignore my previous post. I finally got around to reading the spec more closely.

This format appears to be very different from all other image file formats (even lossless ones). If I read the spec correctly, it stores a camera's red/green/blue sub-pixels separately and does not combine them into whole pixels (which JPG, PNG, TIFF and most other formats use). So the data more accurately reflects the layout of a camera's CCD element.

I still think they could get this feature via an extension to PNG or TIFF without needing to create a whole new format. They probably decided that it's easier to just release something and say "my way or the highway" than to submit drafts to a standards body to add a feature to an existing spec.

I'm going to wait until October or January to see exactly what the hell is going on over there. There's just so many cinflicting reports, IBM to announce desktop PowerPC, but it doesn't support Altivec, Apple created Marklar, an x86 version of OSX, all so confusing.:(

Didn't see that coming! No really, seems that nobody likes Excite Truck from what I've heard on the forums.

Music in Excite Truck is awful. But I suppose that's a premature judgement as I've only heard a single track on it, ever since day 1 I've been using a spare SD card loaded with MP3s. We Didn't Start the Fire and Tubthumping go very well with this :p and that strange Doctor Who/Holiday mix too...
