    gopher:

The single largest issue that we encounter with instability in OS 9 at work (IT department, medium circulation newspaper) is with things being scattered throughout the hard drive. I was also guilty of this myself before moving to OS X, and experienced a bit of culture shock when the OS insisted on things being in certain places. However, I now find that I have very little reason to concern myself with the inner workings of the system. For me, both at home and at work, I find the stability that this architecture provides is more than adequate compensation for the loss of freedom in how my computer is organized. It sure is different, but it seems to have some very real benefits.

...There was an article last year about how Google are putting a hell of a lot of effort in to more human translations. Meaning making translations not simple word for word translations as they are now, but actually intelligent enough to be able to re-phrase things when a simple word for word translation isn't enough. It sounded incredible. It was talked about how the technology could be embedded so that you didn't even know the translation was going on. You would Google for information, be taken to a Chinese coded website and never even know it. It could also be embedded in to Google Talk etc, you could talk to people from all over the globe in your native language, and them in theirs, but as far as you're concerned they're talking to you in your language. HUGE potential...

Going by some of the stuff I occasionally read, I think they're beta-testing it right here on MR Forums. :D

It is nice to see that many companies are adopting Rendezvous as a standard. The thing that I think is funny, yet sad, is that intel is trying to pass off usb 2 as a super fast, video and hard drive connector, but in all reality, it's still a serial bus, best for mice and keyboards... Hopefully when Firewire 2 comes out, it will be backwards compatible with regular Firewire, and digital device makers will be more willing to use it more than the cheap USB 2 connection...

    Let's hear it for Rendezvous!!!

It's still another good reason to keep anything from Real Networks off of your Mac.

Another reason? What are the other reasons?

It's a different matter on my campus. About half the laptops I've seen on the Cal campus are Macs. It's much more than a "small poket" here to say the least!

i couldn't imagine a school, if i had to guess off the top of my head, that would be more mac friendly than cal

Seeing how Motorola has been slacking off as it would seem, I wouldn't expect the G5 chip for a long time, possibly until late 2003. I looked at a PDF of Motorola's PPC processor chart, made in November and it then was talking about the G5. I was in Austin, TX attending a computer camp and heard that some guy leading the tour group talked about not only a G5 chip, but a G6 chip as well, and this was about 2 YEARS ago.

Unless theres something being hidden from public eyes, like what the new power macs will be sporting in Jan I don't see the possibility of a G5 chip yet. Though it is a possibility that there are gonna be some faster (much faster) chips now that OS X is gonna dominate.

    My 2 cents as well.

First off, I know that the EULA stipulates you are not to install/run Folding@Home on any computer you do not own, without the express permission of the owner (or something like that). And yes, I've seen Rower's sticky in this forum. I'll still ask:

Do you use your work computer to Fold?
If so, did you get approval to do so?

No one really knows for sure, but the timeframe for an update is relatively narrow. If you go by the 6-month update rule, the iBook would get its update in November.

The latest we're likely to see an update (and rumours have suggested it to be more likely) is at MacWorld San Francisco, in early January. If this is what happens, it's very likely that the next iBook model will be a substantial redesign, and not just a speed-bump. Among some of the more interesting rumours have been that there would be a 13" screen in the current 12" case size, that the lineup will move to G4s like the iMac did, and (the most fanciful of them all) we'll see the current 14" iBook replaced with a 14" widescreen model.

No matter what happens, hold on to your money if you want to get the most out of a new iBook; the iBook 700 we have now is great, but it could be the end of its generation.

I found some more pictures of closer shots and once again I was repulsed by the texture. The misshaped buttons bother me. :)

I don't mind clear if well presented.

The white has grown on me. I'm just glad they didn't use that tacky indigo blue from the Cube. I waited for the black version before picking one up.

I must admit that it's a good photoshoping Glowurm. There's no bitterness here, but this whole thread has stumbled upon something that I think Apple should persue. I would love to have a subnotebook that small and it just goes to show how constrained and outdated the Apple lineup is now. Where's this digital hub that Job's was talking about? So far it's been all software (sans the best MP3 player, iPod). I want to see iPhones and iDigicameras and iWalks or iDuo-notebooks. Apple has always created both hardware and software for their computers which is the reason why the OS runs so smoothly. Why not expand?

I always get too excited about these rumors because most of them are really great ideas. I want a true digital lifestyle that is centered around my Mac. If Apple starts making even half of these faked products, they would have my money for many years to come.

No, Vice City is better because of what they didn't include. Nowhere outside of America does adding more make something better (which is funny as the console GTA's were developed in Scotland). Bigger is not related to better. The whole Virtual Pet aspect of SA really put me off, get health by eating food, but not too much! Distracted from the main game itself. Vice City didn't have needless things like that, or a world map that was simply too big.

Agreed Vice City did rock way better than San Andreas.

Their homepage cycles through a number of images, and that's just one of them. It's a jpg, and is in no way representative of their server being down.

that would cause quite a few people to restart their computers lol!!!

    thats funny stuff.

It couldnt be named an eBook, because e stands for education, and if all students in Maine have iBooks, then they will feel bad :D. Apple would call it something without the work 'book' in it.

Brings back the old "don't make changes to the song you are currently listening to" freeze ups and crashes that Itunes had its earlier versions. I think for the most part its more me just being impatient and changing songs while Jewel case was still trying to configure itself for the pervious song that does it.
Without the bugs, A great looking plug in.
I want a plugin that will let you assign(find) multiple pieces of artwork as well as movies to a specific song.

What about Kodak's DCS format? I've been using the DCS plugin and pulling the large files without complaint. And I have color info, ...

And don't be so sure about MS...Adobe sleeps with anyone that will get it an advantage. Look at OpenType for example. How many print firms, designers, etc, have agreed to throw away thousands of dollars worth of Type 2 PS fonts for 1/160th the amount of OT fonts? If Adobe offered a conversion program, great. But no. Make more money off type. ($300 for a font library of one typeface???)

Look, I am on a soapbox right now and yes, kinda grumbly. But my reason is, didn't Adobe pretty much flipoff Jobs when he wanted to use Adobe Display Postscript (they refused) and he went Quartz instead? Hasn't Adobe flipped us off by NOT releasing a OS X Adobe Type Manager Deluxe? What about Photoshop courses that push use on PC and not Mac? (read MacInTouch user). Or dumping Framemaker. Or trying to force GoLive when Dreamweaver was a better prog? How about how every new version of Illustrator isn't working with last version files (without some grief...)?

    Its ok to be skeptical...

(PS, I like OT font..simpler and works on both platforms..but I have much invested in PS libraries to not justify replacing them)

I also think steve, and the apple braintrust is able to see things in terms of "the future" than most others.

Face it. It's time the design industry stop being *****-footed troglodytes and realize that, yes, indeed, ID combined with OS X on a new PowerMac will increase your productivity.

And it's similar enough to Quark that one could EASILY adapt. Hell, I did it after using Quark for almost 6 years.

Now? I'm all for Quark dying a quick, albeit painful death.

    Here's to apple "thinking different!"

    Here here ID2!
