If you've never used this program, and you're a casual/interested stargazer, I strongly recommend giving it a look. Heck - even if you just occasionally like to look at the stars every once in a while, it's very slick. Two thumbs up - no idea about this additional pack, though, but I would assume it's just additional stuff to the original.
I've used Starry Night since my days on the ol' Performa 630 CD (when I believe it was freeware). Indeed,... this program is superb.

Sorry about the thread jack, but I'm looking into hooking a mini up to my TV. I don't have DVI on my TV, so I was thinking about getting the adapter that Apple sells and just going the component or S-Video route. Is this the approach you used? Does it look good enough for games/video/etc.?
Oh, yeah - this is a really cool plug in. I'm not usually a plug-in kind of guy, but this one I like. Makes for a great contest to see who can spin it the fastest.

Naw, seriously, I guess civility is really good. Especially if there are this many members on board now...for things to be even remotely like they used to be, with THIS many people, would be virtually unmanageable.

according to motorola the G4 has four altivec units
7455 info (http://e-www.motorola.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=MPC7455&nodeId=01M98653)
now, motorola does have different ways of counting things than other folks. my guess is that the 970's implementation of Altivec is on par with that of the 7455, hence the linear scaling of RC5 performance.
don't expect the 970 to have double the altivec performance of a G4

No I don't buy the Powerbooks are safe being transported during sleep. If they were, you could transport them anywhere. And no I didn't drop it.

do you mean DVD-RW? because i can read DVD's on my TiBook now...
but lets say it was a DVD-RW Sony got in a laptop? when did they do this? new TiBooks were expected by this week, so if Apple is trying to squeeze a DVD-RW in the TiBooks then i guess that would be an alright excuse for the late release.:)
who thinks they'll do it? personally, i think that Apple will just get the new models out there in November, and the DVD-RW wil come later.:(

I looked into it. Its probably above me. I know a little objective C but not enough to do this. I think I would also need some openGL, which I have never used.

Moto was killing themselves to get to 1.25 GHz so 2.0 is out for January. You'll be lucky to see 1.0, 1.25, and 1.5. The "only boot in X" thing is marketing hype. The GPUL is real, but not ready until MWNY (Boston?) along with Apps & OS 10.3 optimized for 64 bit and some amazing high-end graphics demos.

Hey everyone, just thought I would share a website that I originally happened upon, when someone discussed Cocktail. Rixstep did a review of the program and gave it a real beatdown for what it properly deserved, along with other programs such as MacJanitor.
www.rixstep.com
However, I think within the last few months or so, Rixstep has gone from a website that reccomends alternative operating systems and cheerleading Mac OS X, Rixstep has totally gone in the opposite direction and goes out of it's way to completely beat the hell out of Apple in it's articles. I mean, they give Apple no mercy whatsoever.
Rightfully, they gave Steve Ballmer a hell of a beatdown in a faux-interview about Windows Vista's upcoming release, delays in the release, and the rush to gold while hacking and slashing features.
I readily agree with them on many points but it just seems that within the last few articles they're not even bothering to give a viable alternative. They're just beating the **** out of anyone who makes an operating system or a computer product (they absolutely love beating Apple over the head with their Intel Switch, and it's like they find delight in everything that goes wrong)
I think at one article they basically said the only alternative today is Ubuntu Linux. Now, don't get me wrong. I think Linux is a great operating system, and Ubuntu is what i've used to learn my way around Linux. It's a very nice system but it still is not ready for primetime just yet. I have yet to have a seamless upgrade from a Breezy Badger to Dapper Drake distro, which makes or breaks a OS in a office environment.
I'm just really upset that a website that I read seemed to have some very good pieces of writing, and some very good points of view, suddenly just starts beating Apple over the head for everything they do, without really giving me a viable alternative to consider. It's like Apple was their girlfriend that decided to break up with them, and now they're mad as a bull and trying to make life miserable for them.
Thoughts?

This is actually my first post. Yay! Been a machead forever (using a IIgs when I was 4).
ANYWAY, regarding various posts about PCs encoding mp3s faster than macs. I am an audio engineer, and I must say the encoding algorithm is MUCH better sounding in iTunes than in Winamp, and I assume most of you are using iTunes in your comparisons. Different programs encode at vastly different rates. For example, I don't know if you recall an application called Soundjam and another called Audiocatalyst. Soundjam encoded 2.4x faster, but sounded like total junk.
Now.. I'm not part of the "MACS IS FASTR" group, because sadly, they aren't... I just wanted to point out the mp3 encoding tests weren't fair.

Hi there!
I'm using Skype not really frequently, so maybe my experience is not that representative, but i have to say that the program works just good...
I've called to another computer (Mac-PC, PC-PC, MAC-MAC) as well as to the real phone (normal and mobile) with quite a good results.
I've got a very bad sound in two occasions: calling (from Belgium) to somebody in SA; hi has an old PC and has a slow dial-up connection. The second bad experience was when I tried to SkypeOut to somebody with just an awful, really awful telephone network.
But it must be said that Skype is an enormously hardware demanding program.
Thanks,
Sash

Still, the team has continued and we get new people to join and they lose interest quickly when they don't see thousands of points within hours. I'm just glad to see that we've gone above # 35 (# 33 without aggregates) in the last 3 years.
Hopefully more progress is in the works. If only everyone on MR would sign up for folding@home under our team #. :)

One, open firefox and close all the open windows. Now go to tools-->Downloads. Now try to open a new browser window, it won't let you.
The Firefox developers know about that one. However, you might be waiting a while for a fix - it's been known (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21296) since 1999!

The 12" is fine as a low-end notebook like it is now, Apple has no need to change that setup.
The 14" should be made more high end compared to the 12" and given a new case to reflect that, Apple may want to try this to give a boost to sales. It's biggest problem is that it needs something to really set it apart from the other iBooks and this would serve that function.

Heh... on VersionTracker, what they claim are the top 5s:
Windows:
Error Nuker (registry repair)
Spyware Nuker XT
Norton Ghost (for cloned backups... costs a lot more than Carbon Copy Cloner)
Microsoft Publisher (acutal productivity!)
NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 (old graphics card drivers?)
OSX:
Toast Titanium
HandBrake
BitTorrent
Flip4Mac WMV (hah... beat WMP so badly MS gave up and used it instead)
TehTool Pro (oops, that one's for troubleshooting)
OS9:
HexEdit
Amadaeus II
DSP-Quattro
Nikon Capture
Linksys Wireless Drivers
(though it's worth noting that all of these also run under OSX--not sure if that factors in to their counts)
Based on this limited sample, it would seem that Windows users spend most of their time fixing Windows and the rest working or playing games, Mac users spend most of their time either downloading or ripping movies, burning them, or watching them (thought Windows users were supposed to be the P2P nuts), and OS9 users spend their time doing productive things.
(In a way, that last one makes sense because the only people still on 9 who are at all computer savvy are pros who don't want to change their workflow.)
Also, I'd like to go on record: Between work and freelance tech support, I've installed Windows XP and Tiger at least a half dozen times each, and I can say conclusively that installing or upgrading to Tiger and getting it set up is drastically easier, and takes a fraction of the time of XP. Of course, that means I get paid more for the XP installs (mostly just watching progress bars anyway), so I can't complain, but I'll take 50 10.4 installs over 50 XP installs any day.
