I personally think you will love the iBook. the 700MHz G3 is not a slow computer. I have a 600MHz and it does anything with ease in OSX 10.2. If you are going to be hauling it all over like it sounds you will find the iBook is very durable! I think if you want a G4 iBook you might have to wait awhile, but I would not be suprised if there is a speed bump to the G3 soon. IBM has up to 1GHz G3's out now. I don't know why they would not use the speed.
The Powerbook is a good machine, but it will cost you much more and there is nothing you can do on a Powerbook that you can't do on an iBook. If you have a new iMac at home, I would think the iBook would be the perfect computer to go with it. If I was you I would let it come and enjoy it. You can always keep waiting for the next best thing, but you will wait forever, because they will always keep improving stuff.

Finally, Dell decides to use AMD chips! So now you have a choice between Intel chips and AMD chips in their computers. Looks like the PC market has VASTLY changed throughout the past 3 years. I remember Intel was always at the top, but now things have been changing slowly. Oh well, just wanted to say what was on my mind...Trying to kill some time off work. :-\ Who knows, when Conroe and Merom comes out, maybe Apple will sell a crap load of their Macs when compared to other pcs. :-D
Oh well, here's the story:

Short domain names, especially ones that are words, are certainly valuable.
Too bad Qwest owns q.com!
didn't know you could get one letter domains, I checked my host and they don't even offer it...weird ( I would tell you my letter but I would assume you would buy it up and charge me 10,000 for it

Protein: p1155_L939_K12M_298K_DT_250ps_clones
Run: 46 (Clone 203, Gen 0)
Frames Completed: 0, Remaining: 400
Dynamic steps required: 5000000
This work unit was choking the PowerMac G4, which was doing one frame per hour. It would take the Mac seventeen days to finish the unit. How does a G4 user tell the Folding server to not send TINKER units to G4 CPUs? Waiting three weeks for a result, when an x86 system could have the unit done in a few days, is inefficient.
"Seventeen days? Hey, man, I don't wanna rain on your parade, but we're not gonna last seventeen hours. Those things are gonna come in here just like they did before, and they're gonna come in here and they're gonna come in here and they're gonna kill us!" -Private Hudson
My computer was being VERY slow for a few frames one time. To the point where it said the WU would be done in APRIL OF NEXT YEAR. But after a day or two it went down to a reasonable time.

all of the mac users i know are casual to hardcore gamers. to say that the mac gaming community is a minority worth ignoring is not true. also, ALL of the mac users i know are more tech saavy than any of the PC users i know, who only use the internet, mail, and counter strike. In my experience, mac users are more apt to tinker with their machines(RAM,hard drives, video cards etc.) I think apple needs to re-evaluate its priorities and put performance before style.

Or just read the FAQ!! But who reads the Read me or the FAQ when they don't get working??
Good point... except I never enter the forums, I just spot interesting posts on New Posts. So it didn't occur to me that there was a specific forum and a FAQ.

I think this gets asked once a month. And no, MS was forced to buy non-voting shares of Apple stock in the late 90's for being monopolistic bastards, and then end up selling the stock off.
MS owns jack about Apple.

I was a longtime lurker too. I hung around for about 6 months before registering. I used to like to read the flaming of gocyrus. Funny that I've been here as long as some others, but I'm still a "regular". I guess I just don't post a lot.
That reminds me Arn, when did you take the post counts down?

I just checked out the USA Apple Store web page and for the basic ibook and powerbook configurations there is a 3-5 day wait.
Anyone think this is a good indicator that this novemeber 5th date for an update seems a little more possible?

... When is Apple going to negotiate with non-U.S. companies to supply TV content for local markets like Japan? ...What makes you think that Apple is not doing this?
... Japanese TV is very powerful and people watch more TV than anything. We watch on our phones, we watch on the train, we watch where ever we can find one....You may have answered your own question.

IBM will be talking about a 64-Bit PowerPC in Oct (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/08/20020808110527.shtml)
That is all we know for sure.
What I would rate as a reliable rumor is this:
that IBM/Apple have been in discussions about it (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/08/20020809122153.shtml)
beyond that, it's been pretty speculative.

That might be what most people know but others do know more and some people right have even gotten it right either cause they 'really know' or they were lucky. Problem is with most (not just this one) open forums is when people who do know the facts try to present them people either demand proof (understandable I guess) that the person isn't willing to provide (also very understandable).
I'm in that position myself... so rather than try and argue with those who say Alti-Vec is *totally impossible* (it isn't) or 6.4Gb/s can't happen (it can) we either post silly messages like I'm doing right now or just don't say anything and laugh.
What's best is to have much smaller (far less public) invite only forums where fools who post trash rumors (just for fun) as well as people who shout down people just because they don't like what the person is saying get booted and never get invited back. An 'insiders club' if you will.
Do those places exist? I dunno but it sure wouldn't surprise me.. Well that's the kinda place I'd like to be... I'm getting way to tired of silly photoshop mockups and tales of iWalks and the like.

FIREFOX:
I like Firefox because you can block certain site pop-ups but allow others to give you pop-ups.
I really liked the way it did "find" just start typing the word you were looking for...doesn't do that anymore.

SAFARI:
Looks like an OS X app.
Doesn't have the status bar at the bottom...I kinda like that look. Makes the Window "float" more.

Yes, this does present a problem for apple. If Microsoft develops their own propriotary standard, companies are more likely to adopt that. This is why Apple is trying to push Rendezvous and get companies to agree to it. If a MS standard was adopted instead, we'd be completely and totally screwed with our macs, because as we know, microsoft's commitment to the mac is the mac software they make... They really need to come up with a new slogan. but i digress. if apple can get hp, philips, epson etc.etc.etc. to adopt rendezvous in their h/w, they'll just have rendezvous s/w available for win32, so they don't need to change their h/w for win32 machines. So, let's get to building this h/w, so these companies are *truly commited* to rendezvous!
Microsoft did develop their own standard some time ago. It's called "Universal Plug and Play," and it seems to have gone absolutely nowhere, despite an allegedly open standard and an industry organization (Philips is on the UPnP steering committee as well). The only thing I recall ever making news with regard to UPnP was when Microsoft shipped Windows XP with the service enabled by default, opening a colossal security hole.
I'm not familiar with how Apple is handling dissemination of Rendezvous technology, but they've shown they have at least some concept of the proven reality that successful industry standards are a function of openness more than of technical superiority or the industry clout of the originator of the proposed standard. Witness how Jabber may yet become the industry standard for instant messaging, even though AIM is the de facto standard on users' desktops and the company controlling AIM is one of the most enormous on the planet. I don't think we have to worry about Microsoft ever learning this lesson. For one, if they ever did they'd be a much less loathsome company, but mainly they'll never figure it out because they're too intent on owning everything in the world.

I did not dispute for one moment that the Radeon pictures did NOT feature TiBooks. I think there is just too much read into a publicity picture. I would love to be proved wrong, but there is a chance that they plain wanted to use a good looking machine - whether it featured the new Radeon chip or not.
I have seen advertising for Intel based PCs in the former eastern block countries where they pasted OSX screen captures into the monitor. When I asked why they do it, they say it looks much nicer and expensive...
BTW, if you know anything about past macs, clearly the laptop in the XP picture is a G3 PowerBook, because at their time , the Pismo, Lombard, etc. were very sexy. The white logo has been photoshopped out, but the curves and the shape scream MAC!
