I emailed this to rob-art morgan on Saturday :

I know the test was to find out how similarly clocked G4, Athlon and Pentium 4 chips perform but I was wondering if it was possible for you to test against the 2 fastest Intel and AMD chips ?

The price of both a 2Ghz Pentium 4 and 1.6Ghz Athlon PC put's it in the same range as the entry level eMac and that's assuming the PC is built using high quality drives and components. This is true for the UK at least.

I'd suggest the following systems, I don't know the details of motherboards or specific RAM configurations but going off cpu speed and the fastest availble RAM for the systems these 3 configurations would make for a fair "high end mac" vs "high end PC" comparison :

Dual 1.25Ghz, stock HD, stock graphics card, 1Gb of 333Mhz DDR SDRAM, OS 10.2.1

Athlon XP 2200+, 7200 rpm HD, same video card as the mac, 1Gb of 333Mhz DDR SDRAM, Windows XP Professional

2.8Ghz Pentium 4, 7200 rpm HD, same video card as the mac, 1Gb of 533Mhz RDRAM, Windows XP Professional

    He responded with this :

That's a great suggestion. I'll try to get that arranged.

    In the mean time, I'm working on a Pentium 4 2.53MHz + GeForce4 Ti 4600 versus G4 1.25GHz *2 + GeForce4 Ti (4600) comparo.

I can just see the look of disappointment on everyone's faces when the dual 1.25Ghz mac is slapped silly by both windows systems at practically everything.

Call me a pesimist but concidering how it's scrapped by when compared with lower end cpus I can see a thorough G4 thrashing coming up on barefeats very soon.

Have you seen the SONY laptop with DVD-R? It looks like it swallowed a brick!

An external solution with some Apple style would allow owners of older PB's to use DVD-R. This'd generate some sames for Apple @ $400 a pop even while system sales are sluggish.

So how will they work.. wil you buy it and then you will have to connect to the internet and Adobe will check your system and the you will enter a code

If it's anything like Quark's activation, once online you select 'Activate Product' from a menu and it takes about 10-20 seconds to connect and fetch a code from Quark... you never see the code.

However, those Macs not connected to the web need to be telephone activated and this does involve the use of codes, but as I've never had to do this myself I can't shed any more light on it.

Here's the info from the horse's mouth.

I live in Japan and would love to MOD my Wii. The game selection here is so limited and the games that do exist are nothing I would want to play. Since release, Zelda and Wii Sports are th only decent games...

When I was back in Canada during XMas I was amazed to see such a nice selection of Wii games, I'd love to be able to play some of them on my JP Wii.

remove the cube from its shell

place a sticky note where the power switch would be on the inside of the shell
replace the cube in its shell
    turn it on
    no mpre problem

for added fun, experiment with different colors of stickies to change the color of your power light (yellow and blue make ....)

512MB is minimum for OSX if you use Classic. 1GB is minimum for power users unless you enjoy running one program at a time and never running Classic. Actually the 2GB max on the new towers is their biggest drawback. In 3 years 2GB will seem like nothing. I'm at 768MB in my new DP867, but I'm sure that will be limiting a year from now. I absolutely agree with those that say Apple needs to beef up the RAM in their systems. How can they ship pro towers with 256MB and a $3300 powerbook with 512MB that require that you sacrifice both chips to move to 1GB?

Once you stop counting, the posts add up faster. Remember the old saying "A watched pot never boils?" The same thing applies. If you have something to say on a topic, chime in and contribute. If you don't, don't. That way your post count represents your time, effort, participation, and contributions, not just how many times you can click a Submit button.

Hey, bergeek! Nice to see you back today. Too much time in the real (non-MacRumors) world can be harmful to your health!

It is rather condescending also, i.e. - "computer users can't possibly figure out the use and functions of two buttons!"
I don't really think it's condescending. It's not like Apple is saying, "Let's give our users a nice GUI because they're much too stupid to learn the intricacies of tcsh!" Having one button just makes things a little easier for a good portion of the users Apple is aiming their machines at. However, Apple does recognize that a 1-button mouse is not suitable for everyone, and that's why they support all standard multi-button USB mice.
The real reason that Apple will not be introducing a 2-button mouse any time soon (if ever) is that Apple apps do not take advantage of right clicking, unfortunately. Including a 2-button mouse as a stock item would only highlight a limitation on Apple apps.
Except... they do take advantage of right-clicking. And the scroll wheel. I've never used FCP, but you say it doesn't support any of that - that would be the one Apple app I know of that doesn't, and I would expect that that feature would be coming soon.
Oh, and if you are planning to run *nix apps on OS X, a 2-button mouse is an absolute necessity. I use the GIMP as a Photoshop alternative, and I defy anyone to make much use out of this app if you are using the Apple Pro Mouse. Unless, of course, you enjoy performing approximately 100 control-click operations every couple of minutes.
    This is true.

I would love to work at an Apple store, but the fact that you can not visit or post on Mac forums like this makes me a little turned off because Mac forums are what make my day. :p I can understand why it is against policy though. I guess it'd be cool to know when new products are being shipped in and stuff.

I have heard this discussed before, and someone made a point about the Codec chip being designed to handle certain compressed data, but (as I recall) they said that it couldn't handle AAC.

I have an iPod and hope that it is just a firmware update, but something tells me that it will be more than that.

The Mhz myth is true. When Genentech is able to use a dual 1 Ghz Mac to go 5 times faster than their PC counterparts, and Photoshop up to 90 % faster than a Pentium IV 2.53 Ghz on a dual 1.25 Ghz Mac, the myth is true. Even the Athlon 2.6 Ghz is faster than the 2.8 Ghz Pentium IV. In some instances even the 1.6 Ghz Pentium III is faster than the Pentium IV. Mhz has nothing to do with speed. When your stage is 3 times longer, you have to go three times as fast to catch up.

If your Mac is slower than a PC for any reason on the same application it is because the software hasn't been optimized for the Mac. Write the software developer before you complain about the Mac speed. Get them to develop for Altivec. It makes a world of difference.

I've been working in my spare time on creating a distrubted computer system based on Xgrid to render Blender 3D projects. It works well on my local LAN, but in the last week I've started to expand it to allow others to connect. So far the Grid has 10.6 Ghz registered to it via internet users.

Blender 3D is Opensource and supported on many platforms including Solaris, FreeBSD, Linux, OSX, and Windows. The major draw back is thus far only macintosh users have been able to connect and process jobs.

I've tried using windows boxes connecting through an opensource JAVA client and then do connect to the grid and accept tasks, but output an error stating "Blender could not be found at current location" or something to that effect. Basically I figure that blender has to be in the same place on all the machines.

I haven't gotten any Linux/BSD users to try the system yet, but there were some sucesses on local grids with Linux machines connenting and rendering works.

Help and advice are sorely welcome. You can check out www.blenderxgrid.com for more information.

So far, I've gotten users to connect to the grid, but the controller is not distrubting out tasks to those agents. They are just shown as "unavailable". And am advancing beyond my technical expertise here, so help and ideas will be welcome.

This is immediately after the 1GHz G4 came out:

It is important to note that this is only the first installment in this processor family. "The big news here is that this device is certainly not topped out," said Swearingen. Mac users can reasonably expect incremental performance increases from this processor family in the future, taking Apollo to its promised GHz+ performance levels. Swearingen could not comment on when these increments will come or what size they will be. The Apollo G4s are available now at speeds between 600MHz and 1GHz.
