For example, a 512 MB MMC (identical in every way to the SD except in price, 'security' features, and reader firmware) costs something like $400, nearly half the cost of the SD. [/rant]

SD does allow for the addition of other peripherals, such as Bluetooth and GPS cards that isn't possible with MMC, which is storage only.

Well, if you have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, I'd like you to join my Core 2 Duo Symposium (http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/team_display.php?teamid=5349).

    PC's or Mac's -- I'm not fussy.

A friend of mine works with the Xbox support team. I'll ask him if there's anything (legal) that they can do. You have my admiration for your good detective work!

That would be great. I'm sure there must be SOMETHING they can do.

I think Safari is the best. But why when u "right click" in the browser window, you dont get the option to: go back, forward, reload...:(

that's my only gripe with Safari.

Does this include everything that comes standard on a Mac box?

Wow Siliconaddict! That would make us the #1 team in two days aro so :D Anyhow, talk to the systemadministrator, put it on your own computer, tell collegues about it and ask if they also install it. Also, if you only have those machines folding for 8 hours a day, it would be quite a boost!

    MacCoaster:

And why not? When taken together the two 32-bit 900mhz FSB links would utilize a 64-bit 800mhz chip of RAM up to 100% depending on the mix of data reads and writes (wether it is 800mhz DDR, SDR, or QDR).

    800mhz x 32bits x 2 == 800mhz x 64bits == 400mhz x 64bits x 2

    etc, etc

Um, you still have to buy the song, he hasn't cracked the DRM, and the user has to use a program other then iTunes to execute. It would seem to me the easiest thing for Apple is to use a more stringent iTunes identifier. After all, all us non-IE users should be familiar with this concept.

All correct. Make note, though, the desktop Hammer, which is supposed to be called the 8th generation Athlon, is obviously as stated, 8th generation.

There is NO wasy that these are louder then PC fans. Classes started yesterday, and when I went into the school's Dell Lab, it sounded like the deck of an aircraft carrier in there. Next door in the Apple Lab, there were rows of pretty little PowerMacs (new dual 1 Gig machines) purring away like a litter of kittens. Or maybe that was Jaguar purring. :D

Apple historically has had great advertising (until recently).
Still beats the Switcher ads, which were counterproductive because they suggested that in order to be a mac user you'd have to give up Windows.

    I agree...
I would love to see an APG slot to upgrade the vid card. This may go against the whole point of the iMac line though.

With a 19" screen I suspect it would have to have a larger base which could translate to more expandability. I think that it would also make it more marketable to potential switchers who expect to be able to upgrade their computers.

    Here's to hoping...

If Apple has 5% of the installed base, I don't think it's because Apple hardware lasts longer - I think it's because people use it longer.

Where I am, at a Big Ten university, I've seen hundreds and hundreds of laptop computers in use over the past few years - mostly by law students - and out of those, exactly three were Apples. One was a snow iBook, and two were TiBooks. One of the TiBooks was mine, and I'm not a law student. :) If my firsthand experience means anything (and maybe it doesn't), Dell has an astonishing share of the laptop market. Gateway and Compaq are the other two biggies, but so many laptops I see have that ugly round silver Dell logo on the lid it's staggering.

    Alex

Here in the Netherlands Toshiba and Fujitsu seem to have the biggest share in laptops.

Apple iTunes DEV Team, and Steve Jobs listen up, buy this plugin and implement it into iTunes 5.0 :)

    I love this plugin. :)

Now if this effect can be placed in the smaller CD Cover window on the main iTunes window and also a Bezel Option, this is 100% there. :)

    Come on iTunes 5.0 :D

Plus, I'm not a programmer, but I'd assume running Intel chips would make porting programs MUCH easier. I might be wrong here, but I don't think I am... there would be a lot greater incentive to develop for mac, since it's not too much more work.

Intel would mean much more mac software, same speed as the competition, better OS, better systems in general, etc.

So... what's SO bad about intel? If IBM is faster, go IBM. But Intel would be great too!

Actually, you WOULDN'T have OS X OR the pretty machines: The pretty machines are reliant on a much lower-heat chip than Pentium and re-doing OS X, regardless of x-Darwin would be a giant pain in the ass. It would be vastly easier to go with the IBM PPC 970 and/or Moto PPC 7457 that rewrite and retool everything from the ground up.

Intel would NOT mean more software as OS X isn't Windoze, which is way more pivotal to the software issue than which processor.

You're basically saying that if Pigs could fly we could all have fried pork wings and wouldn't that just be peachy. Because of course, not being a genetic scientist it would make all that cooking stuff so much easier. If this was a face to face I'd slap you. :p

I had a macbook and an xbox (original) stolen among other, smaller electronics items, etc.

My experience is one of your "good" neighbors is involved. In my case one of the kids of the family I lived next to (On Mercy blvd. in Savannah, GA) had broken in to my home, then split the goods between himself, another adult neighbor (who I knew was a shadeball), and a third kid.

Long story short, I intimidated the kid into spilling the beans, had the cops take his statement, and suprise, suprise... the next day he had been beaten up (comfirming that he had indeed told the truth). now he didn't say "X did this", he said "well I saw X walking away about that time" and all you can get out of that is a police visit a few days later.

I never did get the macbook back, but like you... I located my xbox, and like you I got no response from the police, or more accurately an unwillingness to act unless there was an airtight case. But I did get it back. Plausible deniability works both ways, and I'm sure if the thief was running through the woods he could have dropped it or stashed it outside your house or any number of other scenarios where you legally recovered it from your own property with a whole array of the thief's prints (which won't really do you much good anyway, since they can always say they "came across it" and didn't move it for fear of getting "in trouble"). In the end you probably should have just knocked on the door and posed as a salesman or something to get in the house to visually identify the unit, then forcibly retrieved it. Now that he's remote, without MS's help you are SOL. Sorry, I feel your pain.

P.S. If you have any trouble with the police failing to pursue leads that should be, I'd recommend contacting your Alderman.

P.P.S. Incidently I found out that the 13 year old "good kid" burned downed a nearly complete battered women's shelter 2 years earlier, and he got off that (no charges file) for plausible deniability as well. Police are nearly useless unless you need some paperwork filed or a statement taken unless there is a dead body involved.
