AHHHHHHHHH. DUCK AND COVER! The apple PDA crap is back! Well i guess we can let you off cuz ur a newbie, but u better learn pretty quick that the two words Apple and PDA used in conjunction in the the hardware rumors section is a big no-no. We also cant have the idea spring back up after we had to kill it during the MWNY era.

A bug in the design of the P4, PIII, and AMD processor has been exposed. Using plugins during a period of near silence, causes the CPU too spike which can cause unwanted noise, sluggish performance during playback or recording, and even crashing.

while you might be able to find it online. i doubt your serial would work since its for a PC only disc. i'm sure you can pick it up used or even new for relatively cheap. check Amazon or Ebay.

Too optomistic both speed and price wise. You will be majorly dissapointed if you get your hopes up on 1.2 GHz powerbooks. It could happen, but chances are that it won't happen.

Apple has for a long time had HP scanners and cameras on their site--Ya know the company that sells the "e pcs." I don't this as being a lot different. I'm sure if Dell decided to get into the mp3 player market they'd dump the ipod and if Apple makes an icam, we'll see some things fly off of their pages. As it stands Dell is not only boosting Apple, but themselves by letting their potential customers know that their computers work with the worlds finest mp3 player. right? maybe

IT would be suicide for Apple to overclock the 1 ghz chip as a 1.25 Ghz chip as the only speed upgrade for line. I know moto is hurting getting any sort of viable upgrade out but that would be pathetic.

Does the whole line run much hotter or just the 1.25?
What about all the talk around the case's cooling properties being for the "new chip" or much faster G4 models yet to come?

If the duals are running that how- I don't expect to ever see them in the powerbook

I would tell them to "F" off... Not sure why your college would even require antivirus software... there is probably more to it than I know.

Anyways, I wish there was a way to connect to the Corporate Server via OS X to see which PCs were infected, that's what I want.

Well they wouldn't allow my computer on the network until I did...so I played along.

I figured it was because they wouldn't know for sure if I had any virus software at all on my computer. Not sure how this concerns them much. but I guess it's better safe than sorry. with this client I assume they can tell if anti virus software is running on a windows computer remotely?

The funny/sad/sickening thing is, on the 3rd day of class a nasty virus hit our school. We were apparently the first people to report the virus to Nortan, so things have been slow on the recovery side. They basically had to shut down each individual dorm building until every computer in that dorm was disinfected. There is a firewall/proxy server to the outside world, but not between dorm buildings on the network. So once it's in, it's in.

the virus apparently spreads like the flu, and shuts down network activity, or does some hocus pocus so that the IT department is unable to remotely help Windows PCs. Each infected PC must be taken to the IT department.

This left me without internet for a long period of time, which was sad as I'm not the problem :(

Is it just me? Am I the only person in the world who just doesn't see the benefits of Firefox? Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy that everyone else is happy with it but so far I haven't seen a need to change over from Explorer in XP. I don't use Windows all that much so I admitedly don't have a huge wealth of experience but still...

Ahh well, as long as SOMETHING erodes Microsoft's market share!

I switched at work a few months ago. Tabbed browsing alone was worth it (regularly need 5-6 work related sites open, not to mention my personal stuff) let alone the speed and pop up blocker.

Try exporting the data from Beagle Works (or Saving As, you might be able to get it into some other program, like Microsoft Excel, or AppleWorks.

If you could provide more info on your set-up, you'll probably get more responses.

    Hope this helped

I have a friend who is going to sell his PS2 along with 5 games for $90. Is this a good deal or I should look at a PS3. Is PS3's graphics so much better than the PS2?

might as well ask, other people are probably wondering too... whats DRM?

DRM= digital rights management= copy protection

I'm also quite surprised that Apple DRMs the songs as they are downloaded. All it takes is a hack into the servers housing the music and there goes the neighborhood.

Nice, they seem to fold very well. I hope that it is a Dually that my dad's wife ordered!

Do these have SSE/2/3? Can I use the -forceasm in the target to get a nice little boost?

Do they overclock good? Can you overclock them? Is it wise to do so?

    1) Macs don't use shared libraries? You must be using System 6. For the folks who aren't familiar with the concept of the shared library (what Microsoft calls a dynamic link library) simply put shared libs are object orientated pieces of code containing functions/methods and other objects that can be invoked upon from other code. Mac OS X being highly object orientated relies almost exclusively on shared libraries. In the modern world of software engineering we rarely find it necessary to statically build an executable. If you look back at OS 7/8/9, while not as much as 10, developers could take advantage of off the shelf code. (eg, sprockets, mp lib, etc). Also you are not accurate in saying OS X is a 25 year old archiecture.

1.5) Microsoft OS's that use versions of the Windows 2000 kernel (2000 itself and XP) just like Mach, have a hardware abstraction layer. The "DLL Hell" days (Windows ME and below) are over. This is no longer an issue with the new kernel. The fact of the matter is that my P4 2.8 machine running XP is equally as stable as my PowerBook G4 800 running Mac OS X. I have not *ONCE* had either one core dump or "blue screen". Sure programs screw up, and when they do, they die, not the OS. Both OS's are very mature.

2.) I have *literally* put my PC up against my PowerBook, and the PowerBook fails miserably. I've wrote a simple stopwatch Java application that iterate through floating point instructions, and if I my PC finished 2.5 times faster than the PowerBook. If you want more details (hell I'll even give you the code) of my app, I'll be glad to share it with the community. Playing/decoding MP3's faster on the Mac? No way in hell. Winamp uses 0-1% CPU, iTunes consumes 8-12%.

3.) You speak of flaws of the "x86 architecture" but do not provide us specifics as to why you say this. The x86 processor began in the late 70's when Intel first offered the 8086 as a CISC successor to it's 4004 line of processors. Many, many things have changed over the course of 20 years. Had they sit still (like the G4/motorola chip) intel wouldn't be selling products today, now would they? The G4 is not much more than an improved G3 series processor with vector processing instructions. Be honest (especially be honest to yourself!) if you look back and compare the G3/G4, you do see improvements, but not drastic improvements. More clock, the maxbus protocol (debatable), and more cache. One of the reasons why you see Apple adding cache like mad to it's recent products is because they are in between a rock and hard place with this Motorola chip. This is exactly the same approach AMD took with their failing processor, the K5/K6. I want you to contrast this to a P4 with an i850e chipset: Insanely high clock speeds, a 533mhz bus, fast memory with RIMMs @ 4.2GB/s, with a next stop of 9.6GB/s -- to MaxBus. You will soon see why the current generation of PowerPC processors is "inferior", dare I say it.

For the most part I think its fare to say that the current Macintosh hardware performance is status-quo. The current best of breed of Macintoshes are slower than the current best of bread PCs. Macs are slower - just accept it. I dont like it any more than you do.

my pc with xp pro ed did crash a few times and it does.
on the other hand , my macs with os x do not

There is obviously not much in terms of speed differnce. However, in the benchmarks I have seen in various places around the web, the older model is quicker. One place I saw the benchmarks were for Macworld Magazine to name just one. I dont believe everything I read, just ones that are backed up over in many different independant sources.

There is no access to USB peripherals - other than mouse and K/b. The mouse does not even work properly as the right button and scroll wheel are both disabled. No sign of my web cam (Logitech Pro 4000) that works fine in both Windows and on my 'real' Mac.

System Profile shows the emulator as Power Mac G3(PCI Graphics) with a PowerPC G4(0.0) cpu. Looks just like my Beige G3 with G4 upgrade card.

dmesg (from Terminal) shows indeed it is emulating a Gossamer mobo
    Got boot device: IOService:/GossamerPE/pci@80000000/AppleGracklePCI...

Networking worked - despite the warning about having to renumber my LAN because it doesnt agree with their addressing scheme. I just ignored the warning.

It works - its slow but has not paniced or crashed in any way. Doubt I will register it but was intersting to set up.
