You probably didn't know about Audio Hijack Pro (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/), did you? With that, you don't need to monkey around with all this third-party soundcard business, and it works on any Mac. It does much the same thing this hack does with Winamp, only this is infinitely more flexible.

heh thats awsome!!, and no i didnt know about auido hijack pro.. sounds like a nifty tool that could come very in handy, about time someone out there did that for mac....
    later...

Link: Napster To Go DRM cracked already: stupid is as stupid does (http://www.macbytes.com/link.php?sid=20050214233050)

Ummm... Wouldn't the cheaper solution be to subscribe to just plain vanilla Napster at $10/mo instead of Napster-To-Go at $15/mo? I mean, since you have no intention of ever using the Janus technology, why pay the extra $5 for your all-you-can-transcode smorgasborg?

FWIW, I knew several people who did exactly this when Napster 2 first went live last year. They took their free month subscription, downloaded all the albums that interested them, and analog-ripped them to DRM-free. None of them are subscribers any more. Having a conscience, however, I don't think they've returned to do the same again. Yet. Hardly news-worthy!

IMHO, this is bad news. Not for Napster, who will have inflated subscriber numbers and can shove the churn numbers under the table for a while. This is bad for the recording industry, who just saw their entire back catalogue relegated to the $10 discount bin. This is far worse for them than the original Napster, as (1) there is no way to track the theives unless they're going to assume anyone who tries Napster then unsubscribes is guilty of having ripped the entire library (which might not be out of the question with the DMCA ... who needs silly civil liberties and "innocent until proven guilty"? This is the 21st century!) (2) the source quality is generally better than most of the files that were being sent around Napster 1.0, and (3) there's a few more years of music waiting to be plundered. Finally, of course, the final insult: the recording industry has its hands all over this; it is complicit in its own demise, directly here instead of as a public relations backlash.

Being bad news for the recording industry, this is also of course bad for iTunes. More importantly, it is really bad for people who actually *enjoy* listening to music and are able to pay for that music.

Negative votes all around. Obviously, there's a way around any DRM (if you can hear it you can record it). Obviously, rental programs like this make the way around the DRM from a personal "why would I do that" game to a high-stakes, "get my entire music library containing every song I've ever heard and a few I hope I never hear again for $10" game.

3 - Its not integrated into Windows. I've seen patches for IE go south. When they do they break the browser. Since the damn thing is integrated into Windows you can't simply uninstall the app and reinstall it to start over. I've actually tried working with MS on a broken system last year to get it up and running after a combined IE sec patch made IE blow up on certain pages. In the end after an hour on the phone with them they recommended redoing the user's system. With FireFox if I want to start over I simply uninstall the app and reinstall. I don't even need to reboot! So lets see. A 5 minute fix vs. a 2 hour fix. Which would you prefer?

I dunno why Apple just doesn't charge sane prices for RAM instead of dopey promos like double your RAM.

It does encourage one to go for the top model and max the RAM out for a good deal.

who would complain being stuck in an apple store? oh well, at least they get iPods! everyone loves ipods! by the way, rockthecasbah, it was 45 min, not 5 hours.
i realize that. I'm saying people above said they would have demanded MacBooks and i would have been plenty happy for much longer than the 45 with an iPod...

Zelda TP 8.9, OoT VC 8.9, SMW VC 8.5, AlttP VC 8.5, SMB VC 8.3 WTF? These classics shouldn't score any lower than they originally did considering they are exactly the same games. He did way over rate Wario Ware though. It is not a 9.1 game no matter what he says.

I'm thinking about getting the godfather for the wii...although a port it looks to be interesting.

I think those ratings are just right most importantly Zelda TP. I thought gamespot had a soft spot for the wii because love to talk about it and give it praise.

First post on Mac Rumors. Be kind.
I live in Japan but am an American.

Apple uses the same commercials world wide. The iPod commercials work great. But the Mac commercials just don't seem to work here in Japan. No one really understands what the big deal of PowerPC to Intel is in Japan. Heck they barely know what a Mac is! Why doesn't Apple make commercials that work to the local culture and targets? Other companies do. (Dell is selling big time to young single females which is money target in Japan, just because they show the price of the computer and its ability to do music and play DVDS.)

Then we have iTunes. I love iTunes but feel that every bit of video content is for Americans. Here in Japan. iTunes video content doesn't really exist. Japanese TV is very powerful and people watch more TV than anything. We watch on our phones, we watch on the train, we watch where ever we can find one. When is Apple going to negotiate with non-U.S. companies to supply TV content for local markets like Japan? How about Local music Videos? How about non-U.S. content?

Version 0.92 was a little buggy for me (wouldn't import anything), but I like 1.0PR so far. Added a few extensions, and loving it more than ever. It's still no Safari, which will kick *** in version 2 from what I've seen. But vs. IE, no contest. The only thing I miss is when you hold your mouse over an image in IE, a little thing comes over it that gives you the option to save it directly to the Pictures Folder or Print it (or e-mail, or open My Pictures). I tried using Download Sort, but it doesn't seem to work like that.

And before you go thinking it's all about pr0n, I have started d/l'ing edesignuk funny pics. I hate that it's easier to do this on a PC with IE.

Robert Cringley writes an interesting opinion about what Apple should do now that they appear to be stepping into the world of windows virtualization. Topics range from Apple building an aqua port of Ooo to Apple's need to purchase Adobe.

Steve wants Windows applications to run like crazy on his hybrid platform but to look like crap. In his heart of hearts, he'd still like to beat Microsoft on the merits, not just by leveraging some clever loophole. So he needs the top ISVs who are currently writing for OS X to continue writing for OS X, and that especially means Adobe.

There's only one way to make that happen for sure, and that's for Apple to buy Adobe.

    http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20060427.html

All in all, a very interesting read.

EDIT: Searched for Cringley, came up with nothing, too bad his name is "Cringely"...sorry for the dupe

I don't understand how domain speculators make money. To grab a domain that someone might want, they have to pay annually for it as long as they hold it. They can sell it for a profit if somebody comes looking, but they have to make enough money on that sale to cover all of the domains they hold that nobody ends up wanting. They have to have either a large markup or a great success rate to make a profit, and I'm puzzled how they manage that.

You just have to be very selective. Type in firefox.com and see what happens. You'd probably be a rich man if at the beginning of the internet you had the nouse to register bigbusinessname.com

oh my god, superdirve and bluetooth?

who ever thought of that as a rumor for the upcoming powerbook:p

macworld had a thing on bluetooth being the future for the next generation macs and there must be dozens of posters here calling for a superdrive in a powerbook

these things probably all need to happen before we see either a dual G4 powerbook or, later on, a G5 powerbook

i don't want to wait til late-2003 or early-2004 to get bluetooth and superdrive as a new thing when the G5 powerbook most likely will be announced, if they even call the post-g4 laptop that

There is NO wasy that these are louder then PC fans. Classes started yesterday, and when I went into the school's Dell Lab, it sounded like the deck of an aircraft carrier in there. Next door in the Apple Lab, there were rows of pretty little PowerMacs (new dual 1 Gig machines) purring away like a litter of kittens. Or maybe that was Jaguar purring. :D

Sometimes I've very pleased with their products. Sometimes I'm mightily annoyed. I spent months trying to get an Acrobat problem resolved and their customer service was the worst I have ever encountered. I finally bought Photoshop CS this year and I'm very pleased with it. So our love/hate relationship continues.
