I'm waiting for FireFox to take on a more mac-like appearance.

I'm content with Safari, but it does display some pages strangely, and I've had nothing but perfect page displays in FF.

I don't like this, how is ITMS going to compete with this ? "Unlimited" number of songs that you can burn to CD and keep forever? I really hope RIAA is going to shut down this music renting crap ASAP!

They are indeed PC's, ugly as hell, but kinda cool, for a PC that is!

If I compare this ugly thing with my Cube sitting on my desk, the choice is easily made.

If you do need a PC, for work, gaming or whatever, they are worth considering, especially because they are supposed to be very silent, for a PC!

I remember a line on Top Gear where they compared the sleakness of an Aston Martin to that of a PowerBook.

Motorola G5 isn't prototyping anymore. It's in production; been in production for a good while. Those prices are probably the current G5 85xx. Those processors are not suited for desktop Macintoshes.

I love magnification. I have it set to %100! The Dock seems so dead without it. But I can see how some people don't like it.

how small is your dock? 100% is way too much, i have it turned up, and i have the bouncing icons turned off as well, makes things go a bit smother for myself

This is the coolest thing... pretty much ever! I was waiting for version 1.6 before trying it, and it's great. I'd buy it if it wasn't free.

It's like having my physical CD collection handy again instead of in storage. Believe it or not, I can see this pushing some Windows-using music-lovers I know into making the switch. It's one of those silly cool things you just have to have when you see it.

Did you notice how good the 3D is? Anti-aliased, and the printing is actually UNDER a thick clear layer of plastic! Look at the edges as it spins. Superbly done.

And it's really cool on TV! Drag the size to the biggest possible: even poor-quality album art will look nice. For the back cover, try Medium Blur and Zoom--it makes the back look different from the front, but still "match."

I'm glad I obtained all my album art for my ripped CDs :) I used Clutter to do it.

    Some tips/shortcuts:

    * If you choose to hide the JewelCase menu, you can get to it by ctrl-clicking in non-fullscreen mode. Or click the Options button for most of the same settings in a window.

    * Hold ctrl and move the mouse side-to-side to change the size (no need to hold the mouse button).

    * Right-click to pause the spin.

    * Double-left-click to view the CD straight on, and again to toggle to the back.

    * Left drag (even if pointer is hidden) to change spin speed/direction.

    * While the CD is straight on (even in mid-spin if you're quick), SHIFT-drag the top or bottom edge to make the CD spin vertically. You'll see the CD even has detail on the top and bottom.

Does it look good enough for games/video/etc.?
It looks great! As good as your TV allows! But TVs are NOT as good as computer displays.. they're just big, which can be fun. Everything is blurry on a TV--just like TV shows are--and for games, if you can increase the font size and run 640x480, that softness actually is a very slick and console-like look. You can get away with turning detail levels down for speed, and never even notice a difference on TV. But don't expect to view small text and details on a TV.

And Mac OS X System Preferences has some very cool options for controlling the picture on the TV. You can expand the image to extend just off the edges with no black border (good for movies) and you can toggle a "Best for Video" mode which I always turn on. You can even set a different color profile, resolution, and desktop picture used JUST for TV! When you plug into TV and choose Detect Displays from the menu icon (or just sleep and wake), your desktop changes automatically. Very slick.

EDIT: I see you have a PowerBook. That has TV-out built-in. Plug it in and try it--the Mini should look the same. (S-video is better than composite if you have the choice.)

Lets put OS X onto the PC platform and get the best of both words.

Because while I admit that the G4 is faster than the P4 on a cycle to cycle comparison, the fact that P4 is pushing 3GHz while we are still at 1.25 is a bit sad.

Plus you are talking about 533mhz busses and RD RAM, many other hardware issues set the PC platfrom above the Mac.

I give apple an "A" for aesthetic design and a "D" for engineering design.

I give Unix and the OS X version of it an A for both design and aesthitcs.

That is my honest view. BTW I am waiting on a PB with a faster FSB and 1.0GHz because I can't bring myself to spend $3500+ on a PC133 machine!

Likewise, the BILLIONS of songs "stolen" vs. purchased on iTMS speaks volumes about people's feeling about DRM, RIAA, and these laws you speak so highly of..

I suspect it probably has more to do with the fact the music is free than it has to do with ideology. People were pirating music way before the RIAA and DRM became 'evil'. They're the justification for piracy, not the reason.

Piracy is an economic behaviour. I can point you to plenty of impartial (ie not funded by anyone) studies on this. In order to stop piracy you have to compete with it. Both sides are dressing it up as some kind of moral war, but it (mostly) isn't.

...glad to see some new super-folders stepping up like 4jna and ppl continuing folding who dont have many resources

just trying to catch you and lord... overtake in 2014 here i come!

yeah, the people folding on the only thing they have is way more cool than me hitting up family/clients for spare cycles. keep up the good work all, and tell your friends and family to come join in the fun. :)

Heee, why does everyone needs to make these comments about me?!?!Because you've inspired so many of us to join. If not for you and your signature the team would have at least 828,032 fewer points, because I never would have signed up.

You should look at comments like mine as a badge of honor! We tease the ones we love…

i second this. folding is how i found MR, and reading the orginal catch me thread between dreadnought and atzyman is what got me going down the road to addiction...

if you want to call it quits, let me know, otherwise i will keep working on this. No, let's get this thing working! Working on a WU that is :D

Hereunder more answers on your questions. Didn't quote them:
is your account an adminstrator account? - Don't know for sure, can do pretty much everything on it.
are you allowed (buy the company and/or 'it guys')to install programs and make changes to the computer? - Yes
are you on a domain or just a workgroup? - I think it's a domain, don't know for sure.
anything else being blocked on your local computer (i.e. can you browse the internet without trouble?) - Nothing else is blocked, and can use internet without problems, even have iTunes radio on from time to time.
are you running any 'firewall' software on the computer, or is the firewall in the 'server closet' with the 'it guys'? - Not on my computer, it's somewhere in the IT department. There are about 900 computers in the network, 2 companies that make use of the network. Every department has it's own domain.

anything you don't know how to find, let me know. i will have more commands for you in a few hours after the w2k box is done and running. sounds like a route/firewall issue so far. we can use some w2k commands to check what is being blocked, and then create a route around it. again, as long as the 'it guys' are not going to try and hurt you or something ?!? Well, I have a freepass from them that it is allright to fold! I will try to install F@H on a computer with XP, maybe if that works... but don't think so. Owh, and thanks for taking time for me!

If the 14" is less $$$ get it for sure, unless portability is an issue. In that case a 12" would be better. I like my 12" 600MHz, I just wish I had the new processor and video card. Oh well I still love it, but I am a bit jeolous of your 14" 700Mhz.

Does anyone know if they ever ran a speed test comparing an iBook 600 with the 750cx processor to the iBook 600 with the 750fx. Is there much difference?

I am in a unique position, I actually bought the 667 G4 Powerbook. I thought I would need the power, the screen, the dual display option. Nope. I never did. After just one week, i realized i had made a 2500 mistake. And, I took the laptop to japan that week, and i had a very tough time using it on a plane.... it was just too big.

[edit: I returned the powerbook and bought a 16mb 600mhz ibook]

I am like you, i have a desktop mac, and i use my ibook as a wireless portal to the web, i use it for typing papers, and for e-mail. come on, who are you kidding? What do you need the power for? Are you Tim "Tool-time" Taylor? Do you need power just for the sake of having power? And some do. I cant argue that pros dont need power, some really do. But i didnt

So, I returned my powerbook, bought an ibook 600 with the 16mb video card. I love it. Oh, and one more thing.... when you sit on the couch and surf the web, the ibook is so much cooler. Really.... it is cooler. THe ti book got so hot, it was uncomfortable to use. Very uncomfortable. So much so that, I didnt use it on my lap. Now the ibook, it is very comfy.

And.... with the money i saved, i went out and bought my first fly fishing rod and reels with the money i saved. I now have a computer that rocks (for my purposes) and I can fly fish and have a ball doing that.
