    It's most informative.
    Enjoy

    it's really most fascinating...thank you

some of us hardware side IT people often make fun of the software IT people and it is often because of the introverted way most of them act or their lack of knowledge of the hardware side of things

but what's interesting is that the hardware side techies like network engineers and desktop techs would not have anything to implement and maintain if it wasn't for those coders who make it all possible

i always hear a lot about the hardware side of apple's products and the praise they get when things are done right, but i rarely hear about the heroes in the background, the developers who make it all run smoothly

of all the products apple has ever made, the mac operating systems is what really makes a mac a mac:D

I agree, that buzz we all get is just missing. All the product releases have been "safe" and just there. Then again its still mid-year and apple may release the iPhone and a re-designed MacPro as well as a true Video iPod. Heres hoping.

thats actually my point, that the two became thier works, their passions. im not trying to say the two are the same on any other level. no need to apologize either lol

    Understood. ;)

In that way you have a point. You could probably add Bill Gates and others into the mix as well.

I would love to see them return to black polycarbonate. Maybe titanium or magnesium reinforced on the corners with supports cast right into the poly. Then put in a true 16:9 display for killer presentations. I wouldn't care if it was two feet wide! And I wouldn't WANT it an inch thick, unless it were milled out of solid aluminum, because I want to use it in the bump-scratch-and-drop real world, not the land of "esoteric design utopia" where laptops are never dropped, bumped, twisted, scratched, handed from one person to another, or even touched.

I hear the Japanese don't like TiBooks because they are too wide to comforably use on their subway trains. I say give them 12" iBooks w/processing abilities at TiBook levels. For the travelling film/graphic arts/web design professional, however, give us a big platform, durable, versatile machine again. EXPANSION BAYS! Yes, you can hook up peripherals via FW all you want, but I don't want to bring an octopus to a presentation. I would rather hot-swap whatever I'll need (CDR-DVDR, extra battery, extra HD, etc) ten minutes before the meeting and have an elegant platform to work from.

Take a Pismo and just add about three inches of width to the case and the screen, 1.5" per sidethink 17" iMac widescreen display on a laptop. Make room for 2 G4 processors, 2 gig RAM, and true DDR RAM with 133mhz bus speed. Use the extra space to make BIG expansion bays for long battery life, huge auxiliary HDs, SuperDrives, etc. Keep the excellent output options, plus an additional DV out for Apple external displays (not that you'd need one) and perhaps two completely discreet FireWire busses instead of two ports on the same bus. Reinforce the chassis w/titanium or magnesium supports and gel-suspend a g-force resistant internal HD for hard portable usage. Offer a CardBus expansion chassis like the Magma only classier-looking and Apple-branded as a BTO option for use with PCI cards. None of this would be cutting-edge technology--its all here now.

The Apple G4 SuperPismonow THAT would be worth $4000 in a portable. Imagine the crowd that would gather around it at any CompUSA in the nation with that 17" screen! It would make the biggest Vaio look like a Timex Sinclair!

I say if you're gonna be a bear, be a grizzly... Make a statement... Over the top...

    Hello,

This is about the future of QT as a media platform on the internet. As more and more content goes on line in some form I see that Mac users are going to be shut out of this. Television channels are putting TV programs online and most are choosing to use Window Media Video. Also most of this content is control with DRM. This mean that there is no way for Mac user to access this content. Having written to some of these companies the feed back I have is that Apple will not license QT with Fairplay DRM controls, so they are left with Real or Windows Media Player (WMP) as WMP is on virtually every desktop and has been on every new desktop with XP they choose this. Apple's refuses to license it software technology will ultimately leave Mac users out in the cold. It's just as well you can run Windows on your Intel Mac as you will NEED to! Still leaves us PowerPC user out tho. I have sent this feedback to people high up in Apple with no response as I used to work in the Retail chain. I have also submitted it to Apple's public feedback pages.

    Your thoughts, opinions?

P.S Apple removed this thread from their own boards!!

Note: This is from the UK where we don't have iTunes with TV content and besides as in the UK we pay a license fee, few people would be willing to pay for content especially from the BBC.

If you post from home and never mention you're an Apple employee on the forums or tell your co-workers that you post, I don't see how Apple could find out.

Yeah, but do you really want to risk a paying job, just to post on an internet forum?

The current UMPCs are marketed as something that will run tons of things (games, presentation, word, ect.) Basically, anything short of Photoshop. Hence the "Go anywhere. Do Anything" idea.
To me, i think that might be the wrong angle. Apple needs to do to the UMPC what iPod did to mobile audio. Make it do a few things VERY well. Make it a kick butt mobile web browser (include Wi-FI and EV-DO). Make it great for mobile video/audio (think oversized iPod video meets portable DVD player). Make it great for taking notes in class and creating/running presentation. THink along those lines. DON"T try to make it do everything, make it do a few things well. How much should this cost? Well, with a processor designed to maximize video, and built in Wi-Fi/EV-DO, I think it could be about $500-$600.

I will have been registered a year in 3 weeks, but I know I only have about 270 posts. I try not to post anything unless I have knowledge or a strong opinion on something, however, I read many more than I respond to and so I seem in the background. I bet there are a lot of "vets" that are the same way.

I know we don't need another Vista thread, but AnandTech have done a preview of it here - http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=2780

They spent a lot of time comparing it (mostly unfavorably) with Tiger.

I had a Cube with a 15" Apple Studio LCD. You must upgrade to OS 9.2 if haven't yet. In the Energy Saver Control Panel there is now an option for disabling the button on the Cube. I forget what it's called exactly but you'll see it. You'll then have to turn the machine on and off with the monitor. This should work fine. They actually added this feature because of the problem between the Cube and the LCDs. Sorry if that's not the fix you need.

Just as an addition to my last comment, I think the major downfall of a lot of the open source world is the UI, there is not much work done to make it more innovative. Most feel like cheap rip offs of costly applications.Of course MS did show how much work a simple GUI change can be, I think they listed the number of new graphics icons included in the first Carbonized version of Office -- was quite a bit, for a look and feel switch.

Apple did say the switch to get the program running in Carbon was rather easy, but they always left out the enourmous amount of work that it takes to make an Cargon app into a true OS X app with all the GUI changes.

So while we may not like the X11 UI ruining our OS X experience, that seemingly simple GUI switch is a big job.

well it would be an odd trend with lots of underlying significance if MS made such a u-turn on the matter.

It was an extremely clean design, with a stated design goal of being capable of lasting 25 years (design, not individual chips!) with a 1000 fold performance increase - 10 times from increased clock rates, 10 times from increased superscalar capabilities and 10 times from multiple processors. The instruction set architecture was designed to support this, including lots of consideration for keeping memory accesses consistent and coherent when multiple processors read/wrote the same value.

It was a really neat bit of work and a shame to see it gradually fade away - especially likely now HP as bought Compaq!
