i'd like to see a major price drop.

perhaps in an effort to win over college students who are buying crummy, but cheap, dell and gateway laptops.

hardware-wise i would not mind a speed bumped ibook, although i'm not sure how much more they can squeeze out of the current g3 chip.

maybe slight revisions to the motherboard, however, i still think the price of the hardware is key. the average student would probably not need more than 800Mhz unless they are planning on playing doom3 on their ibook.

i doubt that they would completely revamp the ibook. it would probably be more along the lines of keeping the current case with some slight revisions but droping the price.

    I would hope so!! ;)

There have been reports of GPU's burning up from the heat while on standby. I had to move the wii as it was in the direct downwind of the PS3, which didnt help any. It's warm to the touch even when on standby.

    Ed

Since when is there a GPU in a Wii :P just kidding

Yeah, in every system benchmark I've done, my TiBook 500 is slightly quicker than my G4 500 Tower, though I'd say the tower is more responsive, though that's because of the 1.5GB of RAM and the quicker hard discs.

In a word though, they're both... snappy. :p

I appreciate what DVD Jon did to help Linux owners watch dvds, but this is going to far. I hope Apple come up with a fix for this, and soon.

How is this going farther than DeCSS for DVD's?

Last I checked, Linux users couldn't use iTunes DRM'd songs on Linux either. How is this different from the DVD cracker? Its purpose is to use digital files LEGALLY PURCHASED on a device of the purchaser's choice.

The only differences here are that 1) the offending company is Apple, and 2) The iTunes Music Store's terms of service agreement. By using Jon's tool, you KNOWINGLY and WILLINGLY are violating an agreement that you yourself agreed to.

I never signed away my rights to play a DVD on Linux when I bought it, for example, so DeCSS has a tiny bit more of a leg to stand on.

But, this certainly isn't "going too far"

why pay more money for quark (?)

Because when you have an established workflow, a tweaked & temperamental RIP, a studio with 3 experienced designers who are Quark demons, about 7 years worth of archived work & templates, very little time to undertake training, a production schedule that has about 150 projects booked in before Xmas... well, then what's a few hundred dollars/pounds on some software?

A transition to InDesign for our setup is something that cannot be done on a whim. I would like to leave Quark behind but the effort involved is not something to be undertaken lightly... this is Quark's trump card.

I seriously doubt that InDesign has 50% market-share as an earlier poster mentioned, probably more like 15-30% tops, less so in the UK but there's no denying who has the momentum.

hey.. i went to the apple store the other day.

next to a new powermac there was a sign that said "1.25 GHZ Mac" and when going to the system profiler, it said it was 1 ghz.

However, if you look at the back of the mac it says "1 GHZ Powermac" ... they indeed do not have the 1.25 powermac on display..

just wanted to clarify.. causa all those rumors about overclocking, etc..

    FUD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FUD) + Retardation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_retardation) = FUDtard™

Which is what Kantor is.. a FUDtard™.

His arguments are spurious at worst, poorly concluded anti-Apple/pro-Microsoft logic at best.

The dubbed ad that stands out for me is the one for for 'Silly Bang', or something... some Eastern European cleaning product advertised with atrocious dubbing and really big hair. Still, we can also make our own very bad adverts for example, every bloody Halifax ad where they get some of their ropey staff to sing some chart hit with the words 'humorously' changed to be about mortgages.

I have to agree with Duke (damn I hate sucking up to people with power). We only asked what you background is so we can understand you points better

e.g. if you only just got in to computing or you have been bought up witih a computer as your only friend could make us understand your comments.

Since you're meant to be 2 months older than me, I'll begin by giving my background. I've just complete a degree in Computer Science at Loughborough in England. I'm new to the mac world but have had a strong interest in computers for a long time. Now that wasn't so hard. Now when you read anything I write you can see I know nothing about economics and just bluffing my way through but I have a sound understanding of both software and hardware (of course that could have been I only just passed my degree ;) !). Mainly I'm a PC guy and very much a m$ programmer but I bought a mac last year and I firmly believe in using the right tool for the task and as such enjoy both machines for their respective strengths.

i dont understand why you are so concerned with Apple winning market share, I believe they are happy as they are and although they want to grow killing the PC world is just silly and not a realistic expectation. At the end of the day competition is good and the person that wins is the consumer, therefore we need PCs to stay so we have something to better.

I have a hard time finding a PC that has a firewire port, has a 15+ inch screen, a 4 hour+ battery life (max.) and doesn't weigh your portable TV.

Oh, and my iBook has a flexible handle. :D

As for speed issues, when was the last time you erased your iBook/Powerbook Hard Drive and started from zero? I did earlier today and reinstalled 10.1 on my iBook 466, and speed is a much less great issue. I would probably put what sparkley said as my signature

    >the same damn reasons i DONT want a PC EVER AGAIN!!! total crap for software that spies on everything you do, encourages lamer pirates, and makes your 642GHz machine perform like a 486. no thank you.

but I'm supporting Disturbed right now. :)

As for all the flamepiss posts, I had to report one in another thread, which I think got edited some way through this post, because of either car analogies, or personal issues. I don't give a sh** who started it, but posts like that do not belong here.

The other thread was Apple Inc. Rumors > [Apple layoffs or something].

Canadian prices for the Cinema Displays are currently at:

1799, 2799, and 4699. I wonder if they'll work in the stronger Canadian dollar.

    Now 1249, 2299, 3799.

Saying that the 2.8GHz P4 is no good because it is based on 25 year old architecture is nonsense as far as I'm concerned.

Can I take it then that you don't think that any of the cars on the market at the moment are worth having or have been improved at all on the grounds that they are based on an 80 year old design? "I don't think that BMW is any good as it is based on a Ford model T", hmmmmmmmm dodgy logic methinks.

i wouldnt worry about a superdrive powerbook because now you can use an external burner with iDVD... yes thats right kiddies since apple is releasing iDVD commercially you dont need a superdrive to use it... the only drawback is that the burner still has to be pioneer (but i'm sure there a way around that) besides apple might be switching to sony dvd-burners if pioneer doesnt get their +r/rw tech done

It seems we have a rival :D, if you can call it like that. It's about the same as folding, but is seems it is more specific for a couple of deceases. When I first read the title, Rosetta@Home, I thought it was only for the new Intel Macs that where folding with Rosetta, lol.

Having said that, I have to say that this has been a fun discussion to watch. I want to put the memory concerns of this new processor to rest by simply saying that I would be shocked if Apple didn't user DDR 2 ( see http://www.commsdesign.com/design_c...EG20021016S0038 ). This would satisfy the memory bandwidth needs of this new chip.

Second, as for the no performance gain, coupled with the faster P4 mantra, I have to say that there are some mis-informed people here. I suggest that we start a new thread and have everyone list the top 5 apps they use on the mac. This is what would clearly define any performance gain a user would or wouldn't see.

The reason I suggest this is that many high performance app developers on the window side ( and I am sure Mac too ) have been working with 64 bits for a while in their 32-bit applications. Even MS in several of their APIs will divide their values returned from objects in two 32bit chunks that must be reassembled into the original 64 bit values. I myself have seen this in file system operations in the Win32 writing I have done.

Since such operations described above require two ticks of the proc to process, I would take a slower 64 bit AMD or PPC processor in a heart beat over a much faster p4 for hard core applications. So a 5 GHz p4 at best on these types of apps still only keeps up with a 64 bit at half it's speed. An OS optimised for 64-bits make this more so.

Now, will every app see a difference? No.

If my average apps I use often are only Quicken, Mail, IExplorer, iChat, Word, etc. then a 2.4 GHz P4 will be snappier than a 1.8 PPC or AMD. If your average apps are DVD Studio, Final Cut Pro, Maya, Cinema4D, etc. then a 64 system will be an improvement. I won't even go into databases, except to say that in the future, more and more apps will start using them. Need proof ? iPhoto and iTunes both are primitive apps that use a crude database to track your data. Overtime, more and more apps with get more advanced in this idea, and you may see OSs come out with master Databases built into them that iApps, as well as other apps can use natively.

So, with all of this said, What are the apps you use on a daily basis?

    Let the flames begin,
    Max.

right, but as we all know, people are using more and more their computer to digital media (MP3, Video editing...). So I think it will be great to jump to 64 bit cpu. Anyway mail, web browser, text editor... are already fast enough even on a P3! People should check the need they have before claiming for speed like you say.

One domain that will be really enchanced I believe it's game. They use a lot of CPU and GPU.

I use video editing on a dual 450 and it work great for my need, but to play recent game it's a different storie with a GForce 2MX! I would appreciate to see 64 bit copmuter but it will be long before programmer opimize their appz, even the OS. Just like ALTI-VEC, but if PC move to 64 bit too, it can accelerate the move.
