CNN.com - Viruses catch up to the Mac (http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/04/30/apple.security.ap/index.html)

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Benjamin Daines was browsing the Web when he clicked on a series of links that promised pictures of an unreleased update to his computer's operating system.

Instead, a window opened on the screen and strange commands ran as if the machine was under the control of someone -- or something -- else.

I'm pretty sure this happened here, right? Yankeefan24? :p

    barkmonster:

I have done some research and discussed with some people and I think that in the end the P4's SIMD abilities are not implemented in the same way as those on the G4. Specifically, although Intel is not very up-front about it, there may not even be "SSE units" like there is an AltiVec unit. The SSE instructions may simply be ran through the same hardware the runs the normal instructions, except that since a single SIMD instruction means a lot more, the P4 is able to achieve higher efficientcy by using them over the standard code.

In the end it is not accurate to say that the P4 runs it "SIMD unit" at 1.4ghz or any other speed, because it just isn't clear what exactly is the SIMD unit and what is the rest of the processor. It's all squished together.

It is clear that AltiVec can do more per clock, but I can't say how much more and in what situations. Answering that will require a lot of research, and this is the weekend.

Also, $0.34 is a nice profit per song * 300+ million songs and growing. Not bad business for just pushing bits!
    ...

Well, that assumes that $0.34 is profit, not gross. Any idea how much they net per song? It seems to me that the last number I heard was somewhere around $0.02-$0.03. The rest goes to cover expenses of pushing those bits around. And $0.03 * 300+ million, while still a respectable number - especially in comparison to my checking account balance - is really little more than a drop in the bucket for Apple...

Well...I'm thinking about building an 800mhz mini-itx box, don't want to run windows, and I want to run Seti@home. What linux distro would be best for this?

Any distro will do. It really depends on your familiarity with unix-type systems. I don't know what the more popular 'end-user' linux distros are these days, but I do know that Ubuntu is a hot distro right now. I personally have Slackware on my two Linux boxes, and I love it.

This is actually my first post. Yay! Been a machead forever (using a IIgs when I was 4).

ANYWAY, regarding various posts about PCs encoding mp3s faster than macs. I am an audio engineer, and I must say the encoding algorithm is MUCH better sounding in iTunes than in Winamp, and I assume most of you are using iTunes in your comparisons. Different programs encode at vastly different rates. For example, I don't know if you recall an application called Soundjam and another called Audiocatalyst. Soundjam encoded 2.4x faster, but sounded like total junk.

Now.. I'm not part of the "MACS IS FASTR" group, because sadly, they aren't... I just wanted to point out the mp3 encoding tests weren't fair.

Do you use your work computer to Fold? Yes
If so, did you get approval to do so? No

But considering that the company I work for only has 3 employees, I'm certain that the boss wouldn't care

Those stores are mostly for newbies. The majority of their employees came from Target and the Gap and never even touched a Mac before they got their jobs there. The geniuses are clockwatchers who don't really have a lot of enthusiasm for really trying to solve a customer's challenging problem. They lack curiosity and are quite full of themselves in a condesending sort of way leaving long term Mac fanatics feeling unwanted and unwelcome. Sort of unfriendly has been my experience. IMHO.

I'd rather develop a friendship with Alabama (Backtothemac) who I know really cares about the little guy than those pompous "Geniuses" at the Apple Stores. They always strike me as intimidating and smug. I have been on the Mac since some of them were falling out of their cradle (1984). It's not pleasant to have to look at their young eyes not respecting long term Mac experience misjudging change difficulties for ignorance.

MS NEVER bought out a large chunk of Apple in the 90's..Bill Gates gave Steve Jobs/Apple Computer $50,000,000 (or something like that) in exchange for adding internet explorer on the Mac desktop...

I don't even know whether there are alternative routes to accessing FP ops on an x86 these days, as its ages since I've been interested in that level (tad of compiler writing in my history). [Intel did always work pretty hard to get IEEE FP conformance though, which is more than most other CPU mnfs.]

The limited number of GPRs is also a design flaw that has largely been worked around.

Maybe the best way to get an understanding of what Intel privately thinks is good/bad about x86 ISA is to look at what sorts of x86 instructions get translated into what sort of micro-ops internally - the larger the change, the less Intel like their original decisions.

Hah, the author thinks the software will become fast and usable and it will affect Apple's hardware sales.

It might affect Apple's hardware sales... Positively. Here's a quote from the article:

i hate myspace with all that makes me a human being.

but i will admit that i do have one, and i do find it unfortunately useful. For my purpose, i can actually use myspace as a networking tool, creating contacts which in turn spread my name around via "word-of-mouth" i think of it as a giant cesspool of free advertising :)

I'm a recent switcher who traded his PIII 850 MHz Dell laptop for a 550 MHz TiBook back in January. In my honest opinion, you will probably notice a significant speed decrease if you are running IE or Word on OS X. Jaguar has improved OS X's performance, but it still lags behind a P III. Webpages load much faster on a PC, although as other reviewers have pointed out, it may have more to do with the browsers. If you run it on OS 9, however, web surfing and processing is pretty fast.

Nevertheless, I have few regrets in switching. My TiBook has handled many tasks for me without greeting me with a blue screen of death. You can plug in any hardware with full confidence that it will work on a Mac (I was reminded of this when I had spent a frustrating hour trying to get my PC at work to read the external zip drive). PC users have come to expect crashes as much as humans expect the rain--a natural occurrence. Rather than "Think Different," I think the new Apple slogan should be something like "Mac: It just works." :D

Here are some of the programs I run: Office X, AOL IM, Mozilla, IE, REALbasic, iTunes, iPhoto, and FileMaker Pro. I have Photoshop 7 but I can't compare the speed between P7 on a Mac and PC since I had never used it on a PC. It runs fast enough for my purposes.

In my direct experience, I have found PCs to be faster than Macs, but far less stable and compatible with 3rd party hardware.

Yep, it is the best and most efficient one. FAH stores its documents in the same folder where it installed its app in. So, for the script of mc68k this is in the folder F@H of your own home directory. You can check the progress of the of a WU by typing "work" in the terminal, and "pause" to pause the folding (if you want to do a heavy game or something), and "resume" if it needs to go back to folding after you paused it. These are the only commands you really need for letting it fold. Check out the read me that came with installer script. You can also open the file "FAHlog.txt" in the in the F@H folder if you want to know the progress of the WU.

    Welcome to the team!

It's the only incentive they can come up with that doesn't end up putting a dent in profits. Ram is the cheapest component of the PC right now, so they figure an incentive that doesn't cost them hardly anything is the way to go. I can't say I blame them.

Whether any of the things on these boards are true (which most AREN'T), I still like getting my hopes up and having them hopelessly crushed when Apple delivers the product a year later than thought, or fails to deliver completely.

It's my favorite part of being a Mac addict!

You know, I wouldn't mind Apple giving us their product plans before they release processors, maybe like 1/2-1 year early. Just keep the products and features that will house them secret. Isn't that what Intel does, announce a product waayyyy before it comes out?

Someone please tell me why Apple isn't already doing this. (Remember, just processor announcements, not new cases and things like the iPod)
