Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Shriver announced their separation late Monday, cleaving a sometimes-turbulent 25-year relationship after "a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us," the couple said in a joint statement.

"After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, we came to this decision together," the statement said.

Schwarzenegger's spokesman, Daniel Ketchell, said he wouldn't answer questions beyond what was said in Monday's statement.

Shriver, also active on social networks, posted three updates on her Twitter page on the day of their 25th wedding anniversary, April 26, but did not mention the milestone.

Schwarzenegger has often said that Shriver, who is keenly attuned to the risks of a life in politics, initially was very upset about his plan to run for governor. During Schwarzenegger's time in office, Shriver and the couple's children never moved to Sacramento, preferring their secluded estate a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. Schwarzenegger never settled in Sacramento, choosing instead to commute by private jet between his home and the state capitol.

Schwarzenegger and Shriver long presented a gilded partnership that crossed politics, Hollywood and media. Shriver, the daughter of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, left her job as an NBC News correspondent after Schwarzenegger took office.

In a May 2009 commencement speech at the University of Southern California, Schwarzenegger alluded to the powerful influence Shriver had on his life. Number two, work your butt off. And number three, marry a Kennedy."

In 2007, Shriver said she wouldn't resume a TV news career after the media circus surrounding Anna Nicole Smith's accidental drug overdose.

Shriver stood by her husband during his campaign after the Los Angeles Times reported accusations that he had a history of groping women; Schwarzenegger later said he "behaved badly sometimes."

The breakup comes months after the death of Shriver's father, Peace Corps founder and former vice presidential candidate Sargent Shriver, in January.

Ryan Mallett found the perfect team to go to when the New England Patriots couldn’t resist drafting him in the third round of the N.F.L. Draft.

The Patriots make a bold, but quality move grabbing Mallett in the third round. The Patriots can keep him and flip him for a higher draft pick later, or develop him behind Brady until Brady retires (coming sooner than later). This draft seems to be heavy on character. Two youngsters added to a group of old running backs. One potential successor to Tom Brady.

The New England Patriots stuck to their traditional draft strategy on Friday – focusing on their ratings of players and not their positions of need and stocking up on draft choices.

The Patriots made two trades on Friday. Mallett played 11 games as a freshman at Michigan – Brady's school – before transferring to Arkansas when new coach Rich Rodriguez brought in an offense not suited to Mallett, a pocket passer.

In one season at Michigan and two at Arkansas, Mallett threw for 69 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

The Patriots had only Brian Hoyer as a backup quarterback last year, so the addition of Mallett could give Belichick an option if Brady, who underwent surgery on Jan. 20 for a stress fracture in his right foot, is injured again.

"I don't know," Belichick said. The running backs of the future could be Vereen, a quicker, third-down style back, and Ridley, a bigger rusher who is most effective running inside.

"They're very different players," Belichick said.

Vereen started 19 games in three years, running for 2,834 yards for 29 touchdowns on 556 carries, an average of 5.1 yards per rush.

Ridley started only nine games in college but was their primary back last season when he gained 1,147 yards with 15 touchdowns on 249 carries, an average of 4.61 yards per run.

"He's a bigger, physical back," Belichick said. "Good running style. Bill Belichick and Ryan Mallett seem to be an odd coupling.

Belichick isn’t one to draft quarterbacks in the early rounds. But on Friday, Mallett was taken at No. 74, in the third round, the highest quarterback selection in the Belichick era. (Kevin O’Connell was chosen with the 94th pick in 2008). And Mallett is an off-the-field enigma whose character concerns would seem to be unappealing to the no-nonsense Belichick.

But as these Belichick responses on the Patriots’ Web site showed, the two do have something in common: Mallett’s father is a football coach, as was Belichick’s.

Q: You said you enjoyed your conversation with Ryan Mallett. Is that in regard to his football knowledge or his personality?

BB: He’s definitely a football guy. He’s a great kid to talk to, and he’s very into football.

Apr 25, 2011 - The Jim Tressel scandal at Ohio State just keeps getting better. Today we find out that Jim Tressel not only knew about the Terrelle Pryor violations, but he actively engaged in a cover-up that involved FBI agents, a slew of texts to Pryor, and not a single word to Ohio State.

So now the question becomes: Will Ohio State return the favor by saving Tressel's job? If Tressel's still at Ohio State next fall, how can anyone associated with Ohio State keep a straight face? For instance, here's the guy that Tressel allegedly introduced to his star quarterback back when he was coaching at Youngstown State

Breaking news on Monday that the NCAA sent to Ohio State a 'notice of allegations' that head coach Jim Tressel lied to them about the eligibility of players in the now infamous tattoo-gate incident and committed unethical behavior by attempting to cover the incident up. Evidently, the NCAA has rebuked Tressel in the strongest of ways and elevated his conduct up to the major violations variety.

If ever the NCAA was looking for a textbook case to lay the wood to a big-time program, unfortunately, Tressel and Ohio State walked right into this one. Tressel, seemingly once the poster child for what's right in coaching in FBS,  now stands to be it's biggest sacrificial lamb for the NCAA to then lay down the law for any program even thinking of going astray. Even Kirk Herbstreit went on the record yesterday, saying that it would be hard for Ohio State to move forward with Tressel at the helm.

Actually, Ohio State shouldn't be put in this situation. Tressel should do the honorable thing and unsheathe the seppuku sword. Tressel is a good coach and will continue to have a great career, but no longer at Ohio State. I guess for Tressel it would boil down to the old adage, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em...."

Prince William's younger brother is said to be extremely involved with plans for the evening reception, a private party for 300 of Will and Kate's closest friends and family.

The Mirror reports that Prince William's grandparents will head to Windsor Castle, "leaving their home in the hands of the younger royals."

According to Nicholl, caterers are preparing bacon sandwiches and "fry-ups."

The Queen is throwing her own morning reception immediately following Prince William and Kate Middleton's ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

Looks like the royal couple is getting two royal wedding breakfasts.
