Echoing a comment I saw elsewhere, why doesn't someone just hire this guy. It probably costs more for Apple to sue each person than it would be to hire them and keep them busy fixing these problems internally.

Maybe he's not for hire. Not everyone can be bought. Or, maybe he's already working for Napster.

they will not allow me to upload the file in any larger than two mb chunks.

That's insanely small. Don't take this the wrong way but I'd consider a different hosting provider.

Are you sure it's 2Mb and not 2Gb?

That would explain a lot! Didn't know that. But with folding (at least in the past) every core needed a different WU. A core can't share or help with the WU of a different core because the outcome of one step determines the raw data for the next step. So a PS3 is doing 7 WU's at once?!?!

Microsoft touts the new ultra-mobile PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/umpc/seeit.mspx) (aka the origami project) as something you can use and simply "go everywhere" and "do everything"

Well, don't go onstage with the damn thing, and whatever you do, don't try to demonstrate it in a Steve Jobs inspired technology demo (http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/tech/200604/kt2006041317503911780.htm).

They really need to come up with a new slogan. but i digress. if apple can get hp, philips, epson etc.etc.etc. to adopt rendezvous in their h/w, they'll just have rendezvous s/w available for win32, so they don't need to change their h/w for win32 machines. So, let's get to building this h/w, so these companies are *truly commited* to rendezvous!

Microsoft did develop their own standard some time ago. It's called "Universal Plug and Play," and it seems to have gone absolutely nowhere, despite an allegedly open standard and an industry organization (Philips is on the UPnP steering committee as well). The only thing I recall ever making news with regard to UPnP was when Microsoft shipped Windows XP with the service enabled by default, opening a colossal security hole.

I'm not familiar with how Apple is handling dissemination of Rendezvous technology, but they've shown they have at least some concept of the proven reality that successful industry standards are a function of openness more than of technical superiority or the industry clout of the originator of the proposed standard. Witness how Jabber may yet become the industry standard for instant messaging, even though AIM is the de facto standard on users' desktops and the company controlling AIM is one of the most enormous on the planet. I don't think we have to worry about Microsoft ever learning this lesson. For one, if they ever did they'd be a much less loathsome company, but mainly they'll never figure it out because they're too intent on owning everything in the world.

ever noticed that when booting into jaguar the smiling mac that showed up on every machine since the first max back in 1984 has been replaced by the new apple-logo? so jaguar isn't only for macs maybe? why not have pc osx by the end of the year?
there a serveral good reasons to think we will see the worlds best os on intel hardware:
    1st
it solves any problems bill g. will have explaining that windows is not trying to monopolize the os market because osx would be the only real alternative to windows as long as one rule will not be overlooked: an os only can survive when it is able to run microsoft office (ask people at be or next)! and osx is the only os besides windows to obey that rule!!
    2nd
building a compatibility-box around any older version of an os is peace of cake for apple: the have done that twice! first time when the changed 68k against ppc and now where (mostly) any old mac-app will run under osx. let's bet they will do the same with older pc-software, maybe the only thing they have to do ist talk to connectix...
    3rd
it will storm the existing pcs everywhere! remember how windows grew so stong? it ran on more than one hardware and it was copied on every schoolyard. let's have that again with osx. i assume that 25 to 30% of all pc users will switch to osx especially when it will let you play with all older software as well!
    4th
it will shorten development since you need only to write one code and wait for two compiler runs to reach 99,9% of all hardware

i do not agree upon that apple will loose its hardware sales when launching osx on other platforms because people will buy less expensive intel-hardware and no more expensive macs. UNTRUE because today people do not only buy macs because of the non-standard operating system only availiable on strange hardware. true apple lovers buy macs because they are macs. nothing beats osx on a mac, but those who already own a pc then will do have an alternative!

Of course, there's probably a huge difference in hardware costs, but hey, We're Number 3, We're Number 3, We're Number 3!
Well, the price differential is not inconsiderable. Based on the www.cpuscorecard.com website, I just spec'ed out a Dell computer with a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 (closest processor to the dual 1.25 Ghz Powermac) and compared it to a similarly outfitted Powermac from the Applestore:

    Powermac:
Power Mac G4 Dual 1.25GHz w/167MHz system bus
     1GB PC2700 DDR SDRAM - 2 DIMMs
     120GB Ultra ATA drive
     Optical 1 - Apple SuperDrive
     Optical 2 - None
     NVIDIA GeForce4 Titanium dual-display w/128MB DDR
     56K internal modem
     Apple Pro Speakers
Apple Pro Keyboard - U.S. English
     Mac OS - U.S. English
    $4,008.00

    Dell:
    Pentium 4 Processor at 2.40GHz with 533MHz system bus/ 512K L2 Cache D8224B
    Memory: 1GB PC800 RDRAM(4x256M modules)
    Keyboard: Dell Quietkey Keyboard
Video Card: New 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 Graphics Card with TV Out and DVI
Hard Drive: 120GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with DataBurst Cache
Floppy Drive: 3.5 in Floppy Drive
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Mouse: Dell 2-button scroll mouse
Broadband Ready/ Ethernet Network Card: Intel Pro 100 M PCI Ethernet Network Card
    Modem: 56K PCI Telephony Modem
CD or DVD Drive: New DVD+RW/+R Drive with CD-RW
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Live! Digital Sound Card
Speakers: New Harman Kardon HK-206 Speakers
Productivity Software: Microsoft Office XP Small Business
Virus Protection: Norton AntiVirus 90-day introductory offer
Digital Photography: Dell Picture Studio, Image Expert Standard
Limited Warranty, Services and Support Options: 3 Year Limited Warranty plus 3 Year On-site Service
Internet Access Service: 6 Months AOL,Featuring the Netbusiness Service for Small Business
Video Editing: Premium Dell Movie Studio Bundle
Dual Monitor Support: DVI-VGA Adapter to connect 2 CRT Monitors to Ti4600 or Ti4200 Video Card
    $2,616.00

I tried to spec these two machines as close to each other as possible, even adding on some Dell software to account for the iApps in Jaguar, and the price differential is still over $1300. Granted, currently you can get Indesign for free, but that's a $800 value at best, and I didn't factor in the cost of an office suite for the Powermac.

Please let me know if I've missed anything in matching specs. I still am planning on making the switch from Windows to Mac, but I also am aware of the price differential. It's not enough of a difference to deter me, but it is probably asking a bit much to expect everyone considering the purchase of a Mac to ignore the price factor, especially considering the fuss raised when Apple decided to charge $8 a month for .Mac services.

There have been a number of rumors concerning ibook updates in the past few weeks.

I was wondering what people thought might be in the next update...G3 or G4? When will it happen?

It has been said that the G3 has a lot of life left...you have to wonder if that means that the present model of the ibook will be around for a while, or that the next one or two updates will include a faster G3. Does the ibook really need a G4 yet?

Here's what I think...If the form factor is updated to include a new 13" panel then they might drop in a G4 (you never know). It would be the time to do it and we are looking at January for the update. If the present form factor sticks around then they'll probably bump the processor to 800 or 900 MHZ (Depends on the next Powerbook upgrade) and a 32 MB video card. Maybe these specs some time in the next 2 months.

I'm voting in "I don't care" as this is not just a simple problem of Apple "abusing" the workers. The lack of human rights, employees protection so on in the Chinese government are the core of the problem. Even if we force nike, apple out of china, their own chinese companies is going to abuse their own people. The problem lies with how the society is run, making companies responsible is only going to be a temporary solution, it is not a long term cure. We cannot just "punished" the companies as it has other serious implications involved if these companies are to change their "practice" overnight. Even then, Apple just outsource the production to other companies and Apple is not directly responsible as well.

You want to use the beta SMP version--it will eventually expire and need an update, but it folds FAST! And it is the native version needed for Intel Macs.

Remove ALL traces of previous folding (search for f@h and fah and folding, I suppose) then gat "SMP Client Installer" here:
    http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

You won't need the terminal--it's a nice pref pane now. But at least during the beta period, be sure that:

    a) You run it nearly full-time (deadlines are vey tight)

and b) You don't change your network (like pulling the Ethernet out or even losing yoru WiFi signal accidentally) without Stopping folding first. (This is done via System Preferences now.) My Wi-Fi drops out a few times a day, and all work is lost when it happens :( But Stanford knows about the issue I think.

InCrease may be useful, but I believe it's quirky with SMP still.

If you're already using SMP, then maybe it's just a temporary outage at Stanford.

More info at the teammacosx.com forums -- and we're open to helping any team, not just our own :) All are welcome, and all help the science.

This whole thing seems like MS is doing a big "me too" action. The PS3 comes out with HDMI and a larger HD, so MS says "oh me too i have that too" and comes out with this elite box.

This happens a lot in the marketplace it seems.

    Ed

I think they did it because they thought they had to remain "competitive", when IMO at least, they already were competitive. I don't see why the consoles have to both have the same stuff in order to be competitive (like they must believe). 360 didn't come with HDMI, a larger HD, or a HD movie player, but it was $100-$200 cheaper depending on model. Ps3 comes with more, but is more expensive. Either you want the added bonuses at a higher cost, or you spend less and get (slightly) less.

I think this was a bad idea, at least at this price point. Surely adding HDMI and a larger HD didn't cost them $80 additional dollars over the white Premium, so they're clearly price gouging per GB and for painting the case black. IMO that's outrageous, but as I've said before - console manufacturers always charge an arm and a leg for peripherals, so overcharging for a beefed up hard drive and an extra a/v port is something I expect. I just think it was the wrong thing to do. If they wanted to add this stuff to remain competitive, they should've left the price alone and said "hey, lookie here...now we've got the same stuff as them (almost) and we're still cheaper" and fence sitters really would've had to question their decision. As it is (rumored) now, you save $20 over a 20gig Ps3, and again...I hate to say it, but if I was in the predicament of picking one or the other - I'd take the Ps3 for $20 more and get the HD movie bonus.
