Mac are the fastest in things like MP3 encoding, MPEG4/DIVX encoding ...[/B][/QUOTE]

    1) DiVX performance on the mac absolutely blows.

    2) After I read your little post I ran a simple benchmark comparing my $3500 top of the line PowerBook:

The P4 ripped and encoded a 6:20 song @ 128kbit/s in a total of 12 seconds. The same process (same song) @ 128kbit/s in iTunes took 47 seconds.

    What does that say?

Personally I think that all the napster bashing is pretty sick.. The more competition, the better. I hate all monopolies, I don't care if it is a stylish monopoly.

Bah, maybe someday there will be a music download service that doesn't lock me in on their platform, that doesn't restrict me what I can do with _MY_ music, that gives me high quality music! A service that doesn't suck to put it bluntly. When we get there, it will be thanks to plain old competition in a free market. Nothing else.

But that's just it. This new Napster service gets us no closer to that ideal. In fact, it's a step backward.

I'd definitely go with the Xbox 360 version. Nowadays, I'll play the offline version of a game for about 10 hours or so, and end up playing the online version for a whole lot more than that. Until Sony gets their online act together, I'd stick with the 360 for any non-exclusive games.

Usually there's a bit of a delay before the auto update feature notices the updates. They do this so that their servers don't get overloaded. At the moment, they're still making localised releases of 1.0.3, and they may not release 1.0.3 to the autoupdater until those are finished.

I voted FFVI Advance as I've played the SNES version so many times and I expect the GBA rehash to be even better. A close call with both IV and V, the latter I'm playing right now...I just love the job system in V where you actually combine the skills you learn of different jobs, unlike III where the only point of learning 2 jobs is so that you can comfortably be one of those 2 jobs at any time.

VI was just the first, in my mind, to have great weapons/armor/relics that allowed for equiping characters to be based on preference and not just have a single piece of equipment that was hands down better than all others.

I have FFIV for the GBA, it's slathered in CHEEEESE. :) I just need to finish it. I almost shite myself when I noticed readers from Nintendo Power gave it an award for best writing/story in a game. They can't be serious?

    <]=)

At least to me, compare with FFI, II, and III, the storyline in IV was WAAAY better and really lead to the great storylines that were to come in latter FFs. True, it can't compare to the storylines in the FFs since, but it was a huge step.

Hopefully, we'll find out more details before the week is out. The memory bandwidth side of things is sounding on track though!

Back when I folded 24/7 my iBook 12" survived. It did fine for the months that I folded, and during the Australian summer. The fans kick in a lot, so at night time when I needed sleep, I place the iBook on the low processor option.

As a side not this is why I don't fold anymore (doing 1 WU to help team at) it becomes time consuming, annoying with the fan and etc :(

I have no real idea, but I'd imagine that any troubles with this software could be fixed by letting iTunes/iPod updaters wipe the iPod and re-format the thing. But I've seen no troubles on my 1st gen 10 gigger.

Music playback under Linux is awful, and this is mostly a really cool hack, not anything enormously useful. yet. It's very cool to add software to your iPod (and I wish Apple would add a calculator to the official iPod bag of tricks), but your inner Jobs will recoil at the interface and slightly clunky controls. Though surely this will only improve with time, and hats off to the folks responsible! It's a very cool development. Has there been anything available for the iPod that so thoroughly hacks the thing? I know there's lots of shareware that adds useful info to your notes or contacts (movie showtimes, etc.) but this is a whole 'nother thing entirely.

You also have to look at things from the standpoint of someoone who didn't grow up with this or that game. Would the appeal still be there even if they didn't grow up or would they be better off spending time on something new? There are some great games that are revolutionary and should be played by all...but for some this will be like a history lesson as there's little things they're used to now that the old games are missing that.

For a lot of people graphics are a part of the whole equation. So it's fair for games to get rated for having better graphics. Sound doesn't matter to me as I usually have to turn the system down, but I don't whine if sound drags a score down as I know it makes the experience for some folks. Because graphics don't matter to YOU doesn't mean that shouldn't be in the ratings...because they do matter to some folks. They're not wrong in their ratings. They might be biased towards a certain style but all reviewers are...so you learn their bias and read accordingly. I salute folks that can rate a football game as a football game and a RPG as a RPG. Winning 11 8 was a great Winning 11...if it happens to have a higher score than some Zelda game that's fine because it was a really refined game at the time it was reviewed and there are tons of folks here that still play that game non stop.

has just finished a series of speed tests from its readers. At least for today the homepage shows these tests. Looks like the DDR does have a speed advantage in some tests. Shows you that barefeets tests aren't conclusive after all. Intriguingly the Flat Panel iMac 800 Mhz is actually faster in these tests than the Powerbook G4 800 even though the G4 800 has an L3 cache the iMac does not. Just goes to show there are as many different ways to test speed as there are people out there testing, and no one way will yield a conclusive result.

Not sure about google pc because you can put it on MAC just like XP on mac!

Well, do you have a preview of Google OS? I'm dyin' to see what it looks like. What if it isn't OS after all, just the plugin for Windows and MAC? Like half of google OS on MAC and XP? Do you know what I'm saying? Well, something like that. lol

I know I'm not alone here, and it pains me to see Macintosh written as MAC. Please, use Mac. It'll give you more credibility around here I think.

Not surprising. When I was in high school someone broke into our house stole a .22 pistol and a bunch of jewelry, also a pillow cover to carry it. Eventually the .22 turned up after they tried to hold up a convenience store. The thieves were friends with the family across the street.

Fact: Motorola plans a .13 micron G4+, the 7457. It is planned to go to 1.833GHz.

Guess: Motorola's .13 micron stuff should be coming out pretty soon (this is the third .13 micron thing I've heard about from them). If it's released in a January-ish timeframe, then we would see it in new products over the next few months.

Guess: the 7457 (or the low power variant, the 7447) would have low enough power usage for the iBook. 800MHz 7447 iBooks anyone? Or a lower heat TiBook 1GHz TiBook?

Fact: the iMac hasn't been updated since MWNY.

Fact: Apple is EOLing its 15" LCD screens

Guess: Lower-end iMac models with 17" screens, 7457 if it's out by then, 133MHz bus. probably 733-933-ish clock frequency. This would be very good for me.

Guess: 15" Studio Display dicontinued (wide screen 15" a possibility, but I think it's probably too short). Probably a 19" added, w/ 17" price drops (especially if the iMac allows them to buy bulk 17" widescreens).

Fact: the PPC 970 will not be in any Macs around MWSF2003.

Guess: Maybe the first Omniweb 5 sneakypeeks? <whiny voice to Omnigroup> please? </whiney voice>

Guess: 10.2.2 will be out by then.

Fact: XServe RAID will be released around then (confirmed by Apple).

Guess: Rendesvous iTunes will be released.

Guess: iChat 1.x or 1.0.x will be released. Hopefully it'll be less buggy.

Guess: 10.2.2 will have improved RAID support for XServe RAID.

Overall Guess: new iMacs, XServe RAID, 19" display, iTunes, 10.2.2

O by the way Dreadnought. I plan on passing you! I have had one work unit turned in on my mac pro now it was worth 700 points and it took 22 hours. I have also lost a work unit which gaves errors(this was before the SMP client when public beta) However I have one sitting on my computer at home finished, I just found out how to upload it. I had a configuration thing set wrong. And I will have another one done by the end of today. :) I will catch up pretty fast with your current output. ;)

So when are you planning on doing this? Don't see anywhere in the top 100 :p
and my G5 gets a bit of a rest instead of folding 24/7. It uses a lot of power and am trying to cut down my electric bill.

Just wondering what everyone thinks might be released or updated at MWSF. Does anyone think that the PowerMacs will get an update by that time? I'm pretty sure the new PowerBooks will be released by then, and definitely a new 19" lcd (maybe even an update to the entire line?)

Personally I'm shopping for a PowerMac but I don't wanna buy it today and then come MWSF an updated version comes out. Do you guys think this will happen?

Anyways, let me know what you guys think, and what you guys expect and/or are hoping for when MWSF comes rolling into SF's Moscone Center (its literally across the street from my office :D).
