I heard people on MR talking about it and thought it was a good cause. Hopefully it'll help them cure some disease or help with some important research at some point. I started a couple days ago and its really pretty easy and doesn't interrupt normal usage, so, why not?

quick question for you ps3'ers. read the faq at stanford, but couldn't find an answer. can the F@H client be set to start automatically when the unit powers on (remote server room, no monitor/screen) or do you need to manually start the client from the menu?

anyone using any additional cooling (snap on fan thing) or just stock console?

like the idea of folding on this due to simplicity and speed. at current ebay rates, this is also cheaper than a couple of the systems i have running. sell the dual xeon, get more work units done, and save some energy. bonus!

Hey, MRU, take me The God Father and Cooking Mama off my "list", I went and got an AppleTV...so no games for a little.

Wil do Zap. The thread has been cleaned up ;) Enjoy your :apple: TV. I REALLY have no need for one but I'm trying to justify one in my own head :D

We can add those games to an April or May list whenever you want to pick them up.

It still sounds like a good deal to me. X-Book is 4X times faster than a PowerBook and $500 cheaper and it has 266 DDR Ram.

Battery life isn't really important because 99% of people run their notebook off of A/C, not battery. If you do, you can run this up to 2 hours on a battery. Still not bad.

All this talk about editing a movie while flying coast to coast is bunk. Trying to do that while flying on a major and they will think you are a terrorist. Besides the jets now have A/C jacks in first class.

And in real life the PowerBook doesn't get 5 hours of battery life. That is just more Apple hype. In real life you may get 3 hours, unless your work on something disk intensive like video or audio, you can cut that down to 2 hours.

I did find a thread on teamxbox's forum "Black Xbox 360 confirmed (http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=514975)".

    Black Xbox 360 confirmed
Microsoft announces that Elite onyx-tinged console with HDMI and 120GB hard drive is coming to the US.

Microsoft has officially confirmed that a long-rumoured black Xbox 360 will be hitting the streets soon.

The model, called the Elite pack, will be the highest spec of the three 360 packages on offer, with a 120GB hard drive and an HDMI output (plus an included cable). The Premium pack has 20GB of storage space and no HDMI, while the cheaper Core system no hard drive and no HDMI. The Elite pack will not include an internal HD DVD drive.

The extra hard drive space will come in particularly useful for US Xbox 360 owners, as they have access to Microsofts Live Video store and can download Hi-Def movies and TV shows a movie takes up around 4.5GB of space.

Reports suggest that once the intial run of black Elites sell out, the system will continue to be sold, but in more familiar Xbox 360 white casing, while the Premium pack will be phased out altogether.

A price of $479 (around 250) seems likely for the Elite, but theres no confirmation of a launch date and price for Europe. If we had to guess, wed say the price will be 300 20 more than the Premium pack costs now.

I dont know anything about that site but it can be true.

get into discussions with teens living at home...then you will get your post count way up...i remember a few high school kids at home discussing teen based stuff and the thread jumped to 500 posts in just a few hours

back when this board started, it was almost all teenagers who were the prolific posters (some were college students who were up to 21 and not in upper classman standing yet, so they still had time to procrastinate greatly), but still, in my mind, they seemed like teens...he he

today, there is a more balanced type of poster here...not all teens, not all techies, and not even all mac users...but the teens still really rule this board as you will see...talk to super posters, ibookin, ubergeek, scem0, or a few others and you will reach 500 before you know it

BF1942 on the PC, I assume? You can't call that playable at all on a Mac because it's still a PPC only game.

UT2K4 is really your only option if you're talking about playing a game on a Mac.

The biggest problem is the vertical screen real estate it takes up. If those control panels could be moved to the side so my text can use the entire vertical expanse of the screen, it looks fine to me.

OTOH, I'm really liking Pages, so I doubt I'll be buying this, whenever it comes out.

How many computers do you use? I use 6 computers from a G3/300 B/W to an 1.25Ghz eMac. I average about 13 hrs per SETI unit, because of the G3. If it wasn't in the mix I could drop it to 11 hrs. Oh, for you PowerBook user running SETI (my's a 667 G4), run a small fan across the PB to keep the internal fan from kicking in. They run hot, I set my PB on rubber erasers (the pink old fashion ones) to gain airflow underneath the PB. Plus the PB doesn't slide around anymore.

That's a trinitron screen with an 85hz refresh rate aswell, not some bargain basement monitor either.

I know LCDs are going to suit some people more than others but if anything I'd still go for a 22" apple LCD over the formac if the prices were a little more in my range at least.

yeah but a 21' CRT does not have 20.1 viewable. You need to go for a 22' CRT to have 20 inches in screen room.

also if the 17' iMac can be 1440 by 900 then 1600 by 1200 wont kill the formacs vision with three extra inches.

Ok, what planet are you pretending to be on this week? There's no way Apple would put a faster, more powerful chip in the consumer and low end machines first. It would make no sense what so ever. Regardless of the fact that the new PowerMacs are just rolling out.

The new chips will go in the bigger, more expensive machines first.

The Five Eras of the Macrumors Forums

    Chapter 1
In the beginning there was blakespot and he said "let there be forums" and there were forums. Thus the Macrumors forums were created. The ability to allow comments on news articles began to draw a community that soon swelled to near 1500 and there was rejoicing. Alongside the rejoicing came flamewars, but mostly rejoicing.
    Chapter 2
But alas, not all was well in the Macrumors forums, the admins grew dissatisfied with the rather primitive comment system and thus the site integrated a new backend. Gone was the primitive comment system and in it's place stood the glorious pillar that was vBulliten. And so it came to pass that in April of the year of our lord 2001 all of the existing members departed on an exodus to the new forums.
    Chapter 3
Bu August 2001 the ranks of Macrumors began to swell and many familiar faces such as dukestreet began to arrive. Over the next few months Macrumors enjoyed a massive influx of new sane users. But in Feburary 2002 the serenity was shattered. A chosen son was cast out of the glorious forums by God himself, never to return. The message was clear: "One cannot go aginst the word of God." And while most accepted this a few dissented and were exiled or fled.
    Chapter 4
Community Discussion was enjoying it's golden age until it was shattered. A massive influx of posters with no other purpose then political discussion arrived. The sane members fled while a few were trapped by the Siren's call of flame bait. Finally the political threads were exiled to the darkest corner of the forums, in the hopes that they would never be seen again. The demi-gods began to roam the Earth alongside mortals in this time, it was a time of magic and strife. The Gods even delegated some of their powers to a few Chosen Ones.
    Chapter 5
We now live in the fifth era. New members who somehow accumulate massive amounts in a short time continually amaze while Hell's minions still attempt their occasional attack on the forums.

What Chapter would we be in now?

Hi, this is my first post here and I'm just writing because I can't stand the pressure anymore...

I started with a IIci, had a beige G3 266 and until August a crt iMac and never touched PCs since my dad gave me the IIci.

    BUT:
    Apples product policy is awful!
C'mon, where is the Powerbook update???

I'm from Germany and before I came to the US to study, I sold my beloved tangerine iMac DV 'cause I wanted buy a PB over here in the States (about 1/3 cheaper than in Germany...).
O.K., I have the money and I'm willing to spend it on the lower model, but only on an updated version. The current one is IMHO definetly not worth the pricetag (even compared to home...).
Most of the people in this Forum want a Superdrive and/or ddr, but I disagree. Just put in the new radeon and better cooling, maybe bluetooth and that's it for NOW. I would buy it the minute it came out.
I wouldn't mind a small speedbump, but didn't matter to me. Bring a major update in January (redesign, faster processor, fake-ddr, Superdrive, whatever...) and everybody would be happy.

I'm afraid there won't be any update till January and even then just speedbump, Radeon and Superdrive (at increased price, of course... :()

All rumors are useless, because noone seems to know something substantial. I definetly won't buy something now and sell it when the updated PB comes out (it's a question of money for me), so I think I have to use the college lab until then what is annoying, because they moved the cubes they had and replaced them with PCs. The only macs left are some b&w G3s in a poor condition (crashed my Firewire harddisk twice  ).

Sorry for another PB post, but I'm just frustrated...

    Vollspacken
...wish I had never sold my C-64;)

I like Firefox and Safari about the same. I give Firefox the slight nod because I think competition is good. (part of the reason why I got a mac :) )

Granted www.cpuscorecard.com doesn't really clarify what benchmarks they use, but in their estimation, a dual 1.25GHz Mac beats a 2.4 Ghz P4 by a hair, and is just a little behind a 2.8 GHz P4. Likewise, a 800MHz G4 is very comparable to a 1.8 Ghz P4. The important thing that I see in this ranking is that in perusing the rest of this website, the people who came up with these ratings do not look to be particularly Mac friendly.

Based on this, I would have to disagree with your assertion that "the g4 cannot beat the p4 in performance", unless your only criteria for performance is sheer GHz speed. It seems to me that at the high end, the two chips are at least competitive, and in the middle of the pack, I would say that Macs are a better buy.
