JetBlue To Bring Ka-band High-speed Internet

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 04:57 AM PDT

Formalized agreement with JetBlue Airways for Ka-band in-flight high-speed internet service and contract includes initial equipment and services order for over $30 million.In an agreement with ViaSat, the airline intends to bring the service to its more than 170 aircraft and beginning installation in 2012………

ViaSat Inc. and JetBlue Airways have reached a definitive agreement to deploy the first Ka-band commercial aviation broadband network using ViaSat-1, the world’s highest capacity Ka-band satellite. The agreement formalizes the memorandum of understanding, entered into last September, in which the companies announced their intention to create the industry’s best in-flight broadband for commercial aviation, using ViaSat‘s innovative Ka-band satellite technology. Ka-band has the ability to offer higher transmission speeds, more bandwidth for each customer, and more attractive airtime pricing than other high-speed in-flight Internet access alternatives. The agreement includes an order valued at over $30 million for Ka-band airborne terminals and services to outfit the JetBlue fleet of more than 170 aircraft.“Over the past few months we have worked closely with JetBlue and LiveTV to finalize a user-friendly and scalable satellite network for in-flight broadband,” said Mark Dankberg, ViaSat CEO and chairman. “We believe the economics of Ka-band will create an environment that will engage more passengers and offer a broader range of online experiences in the air.”Under the agreement, ViaSat will provide satellite broadband terminals for installation on the airline’s Airbus A320 and Embraer E190 aircraft along with two-way transmission bandwidth services using the WildBlue satellite broadband network, including the high-capacity ViaSat-1 satellite. JetBlue will be the first airline to receive the ViaSat Ka-band system and those initial installations are expected to be quickly followed by deployment onboard the Continental Airlines fleet, as announced on March 22 by JetBlue’s wholly-owned subsidiary, LiveTV and subject to final agreement. Installations are expected to begin in 2012.

“We believe JetBlue, LiveTV, and ViaSat make a great team, enabling our customers to stay connected, informed and entertained while in the air,” said Robin Hayes, JetBlue chief commercial officer. “Together, we will introduce a product that will give customers true social networking connectivity at altitude – a 21st Century product that will scale with the ever-increasing reliance we all have on our personal communications devices. We will also have the flexibility to design content and price-points around customer’s needs, whether that be emailing or streaming movies, at a much more competitive price point than today’s ground-to-air products.” The system, the first of its kind for commercial aviation, must be certificated by the Federal Aviation Administration. LiveTV will manage the certification, integrate the ViaSat broadband and related components onboard the aircraft, and provide the Wi-Fi enabled services into the cabin.”We have been waiting for the right technology to deliver the highest speed and lowest cost connectivity to an aircraft,” said Glenn Latta, president of LiveTV. “Our partnership with ViaSat will deliver a system that puts the airline back in control, allowing airlines the freedom to bundle and price the service in ways consistent with their brand.”The in-flight Ka-band system being developed for JetBlue is also a key step in ViaSat‘s expansion of its successful Yonder global mobile satellite network to Ka-band in key international markets. ViaSat is adding capacity from regional partners to the network, such as Yahsat in the Middle East, which will be accessible to a rapidly growing base of aviation, maritime, and government subscribers now getting high-speed access from Ku-band satellites.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Acro Spotted

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 04:40 AM PDT

The guys over Xperia Blog have managed to get some details about the unannounced Sony Ericsson Xperia Acro handset. Based on the new pics, as well as earlier leaked information, it seems the Acro is a slightly bulkier version of the Xperia Arc with new functionality for the Japanese market, including NFC, a TV tuner and infra-red sensor.

Sony Ericsson Xperia acro might sport the same hardware specifications as the already available mobile phone, though the leaked photo with it shows a much bulkier device.

Unlike the Xperia arc, the new mobile phone is said to be 11.8mm thin, while weighing in at 135 grams.

It would be launched on shelves with a 4.2-inch touchscreen display on the front, as well as with an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with LED flash and HD video recording capabilities (the Exmor R camera sensor, as other new Xperia devices).

The Sony Ericsson Xperia acro is also said to arrive on shelves with Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system on board, and with support for various Google Mobile Services, as well as for applications available for download from the Android Market.

No release date has been revealed yet, but with some of the 2011 Xperia phones being delayed or in short supply due to the recent natural disasters in Japan, it could be a while before the Acro hits Japanese shelves

iPad 2 Gets Glasses-Free 3D Display [Video]

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay of the Grenoble Informatics Laboratory track the user’s head using an iPad’s front facing camera, using the positional data to create the impression of depth without the use of specialized glasses. With the help of head-tracking technology using iPad front camera, the folks have successfully displays 3D objects on the iPad screen.

The technology is in its early stages now, judging from the video below, but it shows that both the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 (as well as many other devices) can deliver 3D experiences without the need for glasses, and without specialized screens like those found in Nintendo's new 3DS portable console.

This Glasses-free 3D display on iPad doesn't require any accelerometer or anything else for displaying 3D except for front facing camera.

You can see the demo of 3D graphics on iPad, how iPad shows objects according to the position of the head.

We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction. It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera.

Currently it’s just a tech demo, but there’s a possibility of an app on the cards in the near future.

Airtel and Aircel To Launch the iPhone 4 in India

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 01:31 AM PDT

India's Leading 3G Mobile service operator Bharti Airtel and Aircel has announced that they will launch iPhone 4 in India in the coming months. Both operators did not give more details. This is the first time anyone apart from Airtel or Vodafone is partnering with Apple for the iPhone in India.

Vodafone and Airtel were the two players that brought the previous generation iPhone to India. It is a little surprising that Vodafone hasn’t made any announcements about the same. Another surprising element is that Aircel will be introducing the iPhone 4 along with Airtel. Both, Aircel and Airtel have rolled out their 3G services in selective parts of the country. We are also hoping to see some special 3G data plans for the iPhone 4.

Both companies gave no specific dates for the planned launch. Bharti and Vodafone Essar already sell earlier models of the iPhone in India.

With nearly 800 million mobile subscribers, India is the world’s second-biggest market for mobile phone services and is also the fastest-growing. But smartphones are estimated to account for just over 5% of the mobile handset sales, notes “Reuters.”

Report: Apple To Start iPhone 5 Production in September

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 12:53 AM PDT

Businessinsider have reported that Apple will start iPhone 5 production in September. If the report is true it will be confirm that we’ll not get iPhone 5 at the end of this year or may be at early 2012. Beside iPhone 5, Apple may be developing a low price spec based iPhone to take over the Android market.

The report is based on conversations with a “key component supplier” to Apple.

Here’s the full note:

“Supporting out comments over the last month, conversations with yet another key component supplier indicates that production for iPhone-5 will begin in September. This is consistent with Avian findings in the supply chain in recent months and we believe the consensus view is moving towards this scenario. In addition, our conversations also indicate the existence of a lower-spec/lower-priced iPhone in Apple’s roadmap. However, while our contacts have seen the placeholder in the Apple roadmap, they do not yet have insight into specs or production timing. This leads us to believe that any launch is likely a very late 2011 or more likely a 2012 event. As a reminder, Avian has uncovered several data-points in recent months pointing to the existence of a lower-spec/lower-price iPhone. A lower-spec/lower-price iPhone has also been speculated in the press and gadget blogs, though we do not believe consensus currently discounts the existence of such a model.”

Apple AirPort Express Private Key Called Shareport Discovered

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 12:16 AM PDT

According to MacRumors developer James Laird was able to reverse engineer the Airport Express key and posted an open source emulator he named Shareport. It is an open-sourced AirPort Express emulator that contains an RAOP server to stream music from iTunes and iPods to third-party software and hardware.

One report says that before it was only possible for users to stream from iTunes or licensed third-party software/hardware to AirPort Express. Now users can do it the other way around, that is stream iTunes to third-party party software or hardware.

This could make it possible to stream content easily between devices around the home that typically wouldn’t be capable of such things. As MacRumors puts it, this could mean other Macs, modified consoles or other mobile devices with an application designed for this.

Batman: Arkham City US, UK Release Dates Confirmed

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 10:55 PM PDT

The follow-up to the much-lauded Arkham Asylum is set to be released October 18th in the US, followed by an October 24th release in the UK. On the other hand, Rocksteady Studios considered writing a new character in the Batman universe for Arkham City.

Harley Quinn was originally introduced in Batman: The Animated Series in the early 90s before eventually being adopted into the greater DC universe by appearing in the comics. Rocksteady Studios accomplished what other game designers couldn’t by delivering a game that felt distinctly Batman-ey in Arkham Asylum, so it might follow that enough trust was there for the writers to create a brand new character for the bigger and better sequel – Arkham City.

Expectations are quite high, but thankfully the game finds itself, like its predecessor, in the hands of Rocksteady Studios. On a rather sad note, this is supposedly Mark Hamill’s last stint as the Joker. Whether this means the end of the character or the end of Mark Hamill’s voice work is unclear, but it’s sure to cause contention — yes, the vast twitscape that is the internet has given rise to fierce debate over the “best” Joker — should another voice actor take his place.

Even those who aren’t terribly keen on Batman should at least recognize the inherent appeal of going toe-to-toe with an amputee Soviet clown, pummeling him into submission with your manly BatFists™ (picture provided). The game looks to be more expansive than its predecessor; Rocksteady Studios’s Sefton Hill told Gamespot that Arkham City’s total size is “about five times bigger than Arkham Island…but they will also feel the extreme pressure of the challenges that they face.” Hopefully this will help players like me, burdened with that awful marriage of ADD and OCD that results in hours of forsaking the main story in favor of side quests/shiny things, while still embracing the open-world style of play.

Good News: Sony and GeoHot Settle PS3 Jailbreak Case

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 10:16 PM PDT

The legal battle between GeoHot and Sony had more than its fair share of twists and turns, but it’s now reached a surprisingly anticlimactic (if not unexpected) ending. Earlier today, Sony and GeoHot announced that they’d reached a settlement in the matter.

For those who haven’t been keeping up, Hotz hacked Sony’s PlayStation 3 jailbreaking it to run non-Sony-approved software and, potentially, pirated games.

The settlement itself was apparently reached on the March 31, but Sony only just made it public. Details of the settlement, however, weren’t made available.

Hotz maintains that he hasn’t done anything wrong, saying, according to the statement provided by Sony: “It was never my intention to cause any users trouble or to make piracy easier.”

On his personal blog, Hotz hasn’t commented on the settlement itself, but he has announced that he’s joining the current boycott of Sony products that seems to be gaining momentum and enjoins his fans to follow suit.

Here is a portion of the statement:

“Both parties expressed satisfaction that litigation had been quickly resolved. "Sony is glad to put this litigation behind us," said Riley Russell, General Counsel for SCEA. "Our motivation for bringing this litigation was to protect our intellectual property and our consumers. We believe this settlement and the permanent injunction achieve this goal."”

GeoHot offered his own words as well:

"It was never my intention to cause any users trouble or to make piracy easier," said Hotz, "I'm happy to have the litigation behind me." Hotz was not involved in the recent attacks on Sony's internet services and websites.

The settlement comes as a shock with both parties seemingly intent on dragging the affair to court over the past months. With Sony apparently claiming the settlement as a victory, it appears the PS3 jailbreak community may need to find a new messiah.

IMEI Based Permanent Unlock for iPhone 4 & 3GS

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 09:01 PM PDT

You can now unlock iPhone 4 baseband 04.10.01, or iPhone 3GS 05.16.02 baseband. Some websites are now offering permanent unlock for iPhone, that is independent of iOS versions. Negri Elelectronics brings a new method, remotely unlocking after receiving your iPhone’s IMEI code, which is permanent and lasts through firmware updates and other software modifications.

You can get it from here:

* NegriElectronics ($174.50)*
* Cut Your SIM ($170)*

You have to send your device IMEI over to them to let them complete the permanent iPhone unlock. If you have preserved your baseband (with sn0wbreeze 2.5.1 or PwnageTool 4.3) to any of following, you can use ultrasn0w 1.2.1 to unlock iPhone on iOS 4.3.1:

* 01.59.00
* 04.26.08
* 05.11.07
* 05.12.01
* 05.13.04
* 06.15.00

Presumably Apple would not close this unlocking method in the future as it is the “official” way to remove a subsidy lock – if AT&T offered the carrier unlock, it would be delivered the same way.

Searching For ET? Why Not Try Mined Asteroids?

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 02:19 PM PDT

Is there life out there? That is a question that has baffled scientists for decades. The search for aliens has fascinated scientists even before the first man landed on the moon. The traditional approach has been the use of radio telescopes but this has so far yielded nothing.

Some scientists are suggesting a different approach to locating aliens in our galaxy – look for signs of asteroid mining. Sound strange? Probably. The logic is that there is a chance that the aliens out there could be digging up asteroid surfaces as they look for precious metals. And mining activity would be difficult to miss given the amount of dust it is likely to throw up in the asteroid's atmosphere.

The argument for mining-activity detection draws from humanity's own process of civilization. That is, that as human beings strive for inter-planetary travel and space exploration, such technology requires certain raw materials if it is to succeed.

For aliens, comets, asteroids and other forms of interplanetary debris may be a rich source of such metals and raw materials. The assumption here of course is that the civilization of such aliens is more advanced than human civilization.

One of the first hints of such mining would be the debris rising up and forming a ring around the asteroid. The second hint would be a noticeable change in the size of the planetary body in question in the wake of extensive mining operations.

Duncan Forgan and Martin Elvis of the University of Edinburgh and the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics are the two scientists that have floated this theory that was recently published in the International Journal of Astrobiology.

The two scientists have been careful though to clarify that their concept is not the end-all technique for finding extra terrestrial beings.

Internet Giants Having Issues With The French Law

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 01:23 PM PDT

French Government is going to court for its newest law regarding internet based service provider companies. The lawsuit is filed by companies like Google and Facebook over a recent law that has been approved by the government. The rule is simple; these companies would have to hand out personal information of users for a year if the French authorities ask.

It's more like a challenge which is brought by the French Association of Internet Community Services (ASIC). Google and Facebook, who have lots of users in the country, boast about their security level. But with the introduction of this new law, it has become very hard for the two companies to let users enjoy their services without the fact that their secret identity or general secrecy/privacy is at risk of getting into government officials' hands.

The two said websites along with many others have been collecting a lot of personal information like postal addresses, phone numbers and most importantly, the passwords. French authorities have expressed an interest in all the aspects, especially the passwords.

But Google and Facebook are being used by people from all walks of lives, meaning that they will be less likely to join or use those sites anymore. The number of French authorities who would have or ask for the person is so high that the misuse of this kind of information is very likely to happen.

Google and Facebook along with other companies are forcing the decision to go back as it is obviously violating both companies' strategies with regard to privacy and users' right to private details
