iPhone5: No June Can Do?

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 02:01 AM PDT

It is confirmed. Reports from Endgadget, All Things Digital and Electronista assure us that we will have to wait beyond June 2011 to get our hands on the newest iPhone from Apple, the iPhone 5. At the moment, iPhone 5 is probably the most talked about upcoming gadget.
iPhone5

With iPad 2 already in the market and bagging huge sales, Apple still has control over the tablet PC market. So iPhone 4 has to pull out some more sales for the time being until iPhone 5 comes in the market. The Loop has explored the possibilities leaked by a Korean site and confirmed the fact. Rumors are false and iPhone will take a little bit more time to hit the market pushing its release past June.

The Korean rumors were that iPhone 5 might be coming in late June and Korean carriers KT and SK Telecom would have it along with the rest of the world or right afterwards. But that seemed quite unusual since Apple has been shipping the phone to Korea long time after the launching in other countries.

There isn't a definite reason as to why would Apple act differently this time. Other facts backing up the The Loop story include an unlikely launch event after WWDC. Apple would rather pick up a better date than anytime so close to WWDC. So far none of the rumors spread by the Korean site seem true. All that Apple would want is to get the iPhone 5 as soon as possible in order to revive the war against the Android phones that are "infesting" the market.

Isis NFC Payment System

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 10:38 PM PDT

Salt Lake City will be the first to experiment with Isis, a system that will allow payment for transit fares with the wave of a handheld device and the city is expected to be generally receptive to the technology.Consumers who don’t have the right credit card may be unwilling to open a new account just to use the system and Isis snagging a deal to enable compatibility with the entire Utah Transit Authority footprint………..

Isis, the mobile commerce joint venture between AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless announced it will pilot the Isis mobile commerce program in Salt Lake City in early- to mid-2012. Isis has also entered into an agreement with Utah Transit Authority (UTA) to make the entire UTA transit system Isis-enabled, marking the deployment of Isis as the first commercially available mobile transportation fare payment program in the U.S. Additionally, Isis is investing in the necessary infrastructure to enable mobile commerce on a nationwide basis and will be available to all merchants, banks, payment networks and mobile carriers.“By working with the Utah Transit Authority, Salt Lake Chamber and Salt Lake City-area merchants, Isis is bringing the mobile commerce vision to reality. Salt Lake City consumers will experience a new way to shop, pay and save,” said Michael Abbott, chief executive officer at Isis.Isis, which announced its formation in mid-November 2010, is focused on bringing mobile commerce to Salt Lake City using mobile phones to make point-of-sale purchases through the use of near-field communication (NFC) technology. The Isis system will evolve to offer customers a highly secure and convenient way to pay, redeem coupons and store merchant loyalty cards, all with the tap of their phone.

The Isis mobile payment program will roll out in 2012 and allow consumers to use their Isis-enabled mobile phones to make point-of-sale purchases at retailers across the Salt Lake City area and on UTA transportation.”On behalf of the residents of Salt Lake City & County, Mayor Corroon and I would like to express our excitement that the Salt Lake City area has been chosen to lead the roll-out of Isis mobile payments,” said Mayor Ralph Becker, Salt Lake City.”We are pleased Isis mobile payments will be available throughout the Salt Lake City area starting with the relationship with UTA, and we look forward to many other merchants throughout the county offering this exciting mobile commerce service,” added Mayor Peter Corroon, Salt Lake County.UTA is a pioneer in contactless payments for transit in the U.S., having implemented a tap on, tap off system in early 2009. The existing system, which allows consumers to pay with their contactless credit and debit card by tapping an electronic fare reader on a bus or train platform, will allow Isis-enabled mobile phone users to pay using their phone.

“Partnering with Isis is a critical step forward in widespread mobile contactless acceptance throughout the Salt Lake City area,” said Michael Allegra, General Manager at Utah Transit Authority. “Isis allows us to build upon our existing ‘tap on, tap off’ system, and provide our customers with a new, more convenient way to use public transportation using only a mobile phone.”"Salt Lake City is on the cutting edge in so many ways and we are committed to incorporating promising technologies to improve the quality of life for the people of our community,” said Lane Beattie, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber. “As Utah’s largest business association representing over half the state’s workforce, we are excited about Isis as it gives our merchants a way to streamline their transactions and, more importantly, connect with their customers.”

Microsoft Launches Bing App for iPad

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 02:14 PM PDT

It was a longtime coming, but today Microsoft released the Bing app for the Apple iPad.  This is Microsoft’s first full feature iPad app, and the second Bing app for iOS platform (Bing for iPhone).  To tell you the truth, I have been waiting for this app for a while now.  The iPhone version of Bing is one of my favorite apps, and after playing around with the iPad version briefly, I feel the this version is of the same caliber.

Microsoft Launches Bing App for iPad

This release shows Microsoft’s willingness to support competing mobile platforms.  That might seem a bit strange, since this release comes only a few days after high ranking Microsoft official, Craig Mundie, went on the record as saying that the iPad is only a “fad”.

Nevertheless the Bing for iPad app brings some neat features that are not available on the web version.  The app includes a a new custom design with an opening page that show you a quick rundown of everything essential like local weather, top news, maps, and movies.  There is also a a new Trends feature, which is exclusive to the iPad version.  It offers the user a overview of all trending topics on Bing.  The next big feature is Bing's Voice Search powered by TellMe.  If you have used the voice search on the Google iPad app, then you would know how handy of a feature this is.  Add the special swiping gesture, and the fact that the Bing team built this up from scratch for a touch-based tablet experience, and you get yourself a pretty cool app.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Bing for iPad is pretty straightforward.  It brings their mantra of  ”helping people stop searching and start deciding”, into a nice visual fold with a comfortable user experience.  What more could you ask for from Microsoft?  The Bing for iPad app is free and is available now for download on the iTunes App Store.

Intel 10-core Xeon E7

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 01:06 PM PDT

Intel announced its new E-series of Xeon processors and claiming that the new processors will deliver nearly unparalleled advances in CPU performance and power efficiency.Xeon E7 is intended for both servers as well as very high performance computers and is Intel's first chip to surpass eight cores and new ten-core chip supports up to 20 threads and is up to 40 percent faster and more energy efficient………

Enabling IT departments to better manage data-intensive environments through new security and reliability features and record-breaking performance, a new family of server processors that accelerate mission-critical computing have been announced by Intel Corporation. The record-setting Intel Xeon processor E7-8800/4800/2800 product families build on Intel’s previous generation of server processors to set a new standard for high-end computing applications, including business intelligence, real-time data analytics and virtualization. Strengthening the line of defense for data centers, the new processors also provide advanced security features that ensure greater data integrity.Based on Intel’s leading 32-nanometer (nm) process technology, the new Intel Xeon processors have up to 10 cores with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology and deliver up to 40 percent greater performance than the Intel Xeon 7500 series processor. Concurrently, a new energy-saving feature reduces the power draw of idle portions of the chip. Beginning today, more than 35 systems based on the Intel Xeon processor E7 family are expected to ship from manufacturers around the world.

“Intel has been changing the economics for mission-critical computing server deployments for more than a decade, and today we are raising the bar yet again,” said Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Data Center Group. “The new Intel Xeon processor E7 family delivers record breaking performance with powerful new security, reliability and energy efficiency enhancements. The industry momentum we’re seeing for this new server processor architecture is unparalleled in Intel’s history. The days of IT organizations being forced to deploy expensive, closed RISC architectures for mission-critical applications are nearing an end.”The new processor family contains 18 new processors for two-, four- and eight-socket servers, and is expandable to servers with 256 sockets. It also sets more than a dozen world records in performance. A 40 percent improvement in generational compute-intensive performance can enhance the pace and accuracy of applications in such fields as scientific research and financial services where speed is essential. With up to 25 percent better performance with virtual machine3 applications than the current generation, the new chips also hold the industry’s highest virtualization performance.

IT managers seeking to achieve greater economic efficiencies can replace 18 dual-core servers with a single Xeon processor E7-based server. To help address rising energy costs, the new Xeon chips include Intel Intelligent Power technology that dynamically reduces idle power consumption of the chip based on the workload while also delivering advanced processor power-management capabilities.Recognizing the range of compute-intensive applications from climate modeling to real-time business analytics, and the need for uncompromised performance to run them, Intel is offering 10 advanced 10-core versions of the chip, led by the E7-8870, E7-4870 and E7-2870, all of which reach 2.4 GHz with a TDP (Thermal Design Point) of 130 watts. The company also announced a version of the chip that combines the benefits of high performance with low voltage, as well as a frequency-optimized version. The 10-core low-voltage E7-8867L reaches 2.13 GHz with a TDP of 105 watts, while the eight-core frequency-optimized E7-8837 tops out at 2.67 GHz with a TDP of 130 watts.

Intel Xeon processor E7 family based-platforms add a massive 2 Terabyte of memory in a four-socket system supported by the new processors. Microsoft And Toyota Make Partnership For Charging Systems Of EVs

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 11:48 AM PDT

Microsoft and Toyota to partner on smarter charging systems for EVs and ave announced a ¥1 billion (about $12 million) deal to extend Microsoft’s telematics wizardry which powers Toyota’s Entune system, among many others to help link people, automobiles and homes for integrated control of energy consumption………….

Microsoft Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. (TMC) announced they have forged a strategic partnership and plan to build a global platform for TMC‘s next-generation telematics services using the Windows Azure platform. Telematics is the fusing of telecommunications and information technologies in vehicles; it can encompass GPS systems, energy management and other multimedia technologies. As part of the partnership, the two companies plan to participate in a 1 billion yen (approximately $12 million) investment in Toyota Media Service Co., a TMC subsidiary that offers digital information services to Toyota automotive customers. The two companies aim to help develop and deploy telematics applications on the Windows Azure platform, which includes Windows Azure and Microsoft SQL Azure, starting with TMC’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2012. TMC‘s goal is to establish a complete global cloud platform by 2015 that will provide affordable and advanced telematics services to Toyota automotive customers around the world.

As part of its smart-grid activities, aimed at achieving a low-carbon society through efficient energy use, TMC is conducting trials in Japan of its Toyota Smart Center pilot program, which plans to link people, automobiles and homes for integrated control of energy consumption. TMC believes that, as electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles become more popular, such systems will rely more on telematics services for achieving efficient energy management. Microsoft has a long history of delivering platforms and services to the automotive market, including in-car infotainment systems built on the Windows Embedded Automotive platform, in-car mapping services with Bing and the Microsoft Tellme voice application, and many other consumer solutions. “Today’s announcement of our partnership with TMC is a great example of how we continue to invest in the automotive industry and of our commitment to power the services that are important to consumers,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “It further validates the power of the cloud, as the Windows Azure platform will provide the enterprise-grade, scalable platform that TMC needs to deliver telematics in its automobiles worldwide.”

“This new partnership between Microsoft and Toyota is an important step in developing greater future mobility and energy management for consumers around the world. Creating these more efficient, more environmentally advanced products will be our contribution to society,” said Akio Toyoda, president of TMC. “To achieve this, it is important to develop a new link between vehicles, people and smart center energy-management systems.” Following a signing ceremony today at Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash.-based headquarters, Ballmer and Toyoda will hold a virtual press conference online from 1 to 2 p.m. PDT. Media can register for the event at http://www.studiosevent.com/press-event and ask questions of both company leaders. More information on the announcement is available at the Microsoft News Center at http://www.microsoft.com/newscenter or the Toyota USA Newsroom at http://www.toyotanewsroom.com.

Tablet Gaming Taken To Another Level

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 10:42 AM PDT

Epic has come up with the most anticipated version of Unreal Engine ever. With the amount of processing power available to the new phones, mobile graphics has evolved to a new level. It is a platform which keeps offering better hardware every year.

Tablet Gaming Taken To Another Level
There was a time when developers would target the consoles for developing a technology or a new game. Consoles have a tendency to increase its power every seven or eight years whereas smart phones and tablet PCs are doing that each year and at a higher rate.

The newest iPad claims to have nine times the graphics processing power of its predecessor which was released only a year ago. These new devices are making developers like Epic think in a new direction with their game development.

You would be astonished at what Epic has created for the iPad 2 with Unreal Engine. They said the tablet has more potential than any other device in the market as of now. That seems hard to believe when we take into account the fact that it has only 512 mega bytes of memory.

Well, it appears the potential lies in the proper management of the hardware resources in a device, not what kind of hardware is installed in it. The power of iPad 2 as a tablet is in its consistency which is unlike any other competitor product. The competitors are trying to integrate more power in their devices which is kind of useless unless there is matching software to harness that power.

Hardware drivers has been the least of all interests among the manufacturers which puts their devices behind Apple's ones. iOS and the whole Apple products are far more consistent in terms of development. This gives a unique edge to the Apple products which is the key to success according to Epic.

But all that being said, there is a new kid on the block that is not being talked about much. It's the Sony NGP. About this bad boy, only one thing can give anyone an idea of the superb capabilities it possibly has, the fact that it is being developed by a company that produces gaming consoles, phones and portable computers.

Add all that and you can be sure that it will leave the competitors far behind…

Google Maps For Android To Add Detailed Location History

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 09:45 AM PDT

Google has been trying to develop a lot of products at the same time. As of now, they have been putting more effort than ever to develop both Chrome and Android. While the browser is already a huge success, the mobile OS is yet to achieve a lot. Android was one of the most anticipated products Google has ever offered.

Google Maps For Android To Add Detailed Location History

Developers all over the world along with cell phone manufacturers were waiting for it but it seemed that it had more issues than prospected at first glance. Since then, Google has been trying to fix it constantly. The app manufacturers have also complained for its inconsistency which accounts for very little number of standard apps for Android.

This lead to constant development and more phones were coming to the market that can take the advantage of these features. During this current shortage of apps, Google has announced a new Google Maps app, version 5.3 for Android with some new cool features.

This version is an update over the previous one. It now has Location History dashboard. Other associated features are checking in at home and adding new categories for rating places. This version allows you to track such details as: the time spent at places, how far they have traveled, etc.

Google understands the value of privacy so the information is private only to the user. However, you can choose to share this information too. There are options to choose and to share this information with the people you want.

There is no way for an outsider to know the location of your home or to pinpoint it. Google Places with Hotspot feature now allows you to add custom categories besides the pre-made ones. You can download this app for free if your phone is equipped with Android 1.6 or higher.
