Sony S1 Android Honeycomb Tablet Coming This Summer

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:14 AM PDT

Sony's President Sir Howard Stringer has revealed in an interview to Nikkei (the Japanese business newspaper) that Sony will release its first tablet with Honeycomb Android platform this year. He also confirmed that Google's HoneyComb 3.0 would be the Tablet Operating System on the device. Google has earlier made it very clear that HoneyComb 3.0 would be the operating system for Tablets and not Mobiles.

The company is serious in their entry in the tablet market and even plans to take the second place in the tablet market behind Apple's iPad by year 2012. In order for this to happen the company has to deliver a truly exceptional device since it will be facing strong competition from several manufacturers who are releasing their Android tablets this year.

Probable Specs of S1:

* NVIDIA Tegra 2
* Dual core processor
* GeForce Graphics Chip
* Multi touch screen 9.4 inches
* 1280 × 800 Resolution
* Native support for the PlayStation platform Suite

It seems a little odd that Sony is talking about delays of the NGP at the same time they’re announcing tablets to ship this year, but I suppose it all comes down to where the hardware is being manufactured.

64GB iPhone 5 May Come With New Toshiba SmartNAND

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:49 AM PDT

Toshiba has launched its next-generation 24-nanometer (nm) NAND flash product family, the SmartNAND. The SmartNAND series integrates leading-edge 24nm process NAND flash technology with a control chip that supports error correction code (ECC) and is available in densities ranging from 4 to 64 gigabyte (GB).

The other good news is the storage options on these SmartNAND chips goes up to 64GB with the 64GB model set to appear by August. However, as we all know from experience, Apple likes to be first to market with new components if it sees an advantage in using them.

Samples of the new SmartNAND family are available in mid-April and mass production will begin in the second quarter of CY2011 (April to June). Mass production of the 64GB version doesn’t begin until Q3 2011 which is in line with recent rumors that estimate the iPhone 5 will be released this fall.

Intel to Launch Core i7 Processors for New Macbook Air

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:40 AM PDT

Intel is going to launch its Sandy Bridge ultra low voltage CPUs for the next generation MacBook Air. These processors would bring in Ultra Low Voltage technology-based Sandy Bridge. These new CPUs will replace the current Core i7 680UM version that comes with a clock speed of 1.46GHz and give a maximum of 2.53GHz of speed.

Fudzilla's recent report reads:

This CPU replaces the Core i7 680UM clocked at 1.46GHz and ability to Turbo all the way to 2.53 GHz. The 680 UM is a part of a dying breed of Calpella processors that only launched in Q3 2010. The new Sandy Bridge based 2657M now has 1.6GHz clock and single core Turbo all the way to 2.7GHz. Of course this is a Sandy Bridge part.

The Core i7 2657M is still a 17W maximal TDP, has two cores and four threads as well as 4MB of cache memory. It continues with Intel HD 3000 graphics and FSB 1333 tradition. Once it launches it will sell for $317 for a mobile version, as long as you buy at least a 1000 of them, and the launch schedule is Q2 2011.

2657M i7 processors will still have a TDP (Thermal Design Power), 2 cores, 4 threads and 1333 FSB. It will also incorporate 4MB of internal cache memory and an Intel HD 3000 graphics processor directly into the CPU itself. The new CPU is expected to be released in Q2 2011. Currently MacBook Air comes with Core i7 680UM version, however with the release of the new 2657M i7 processor MacBook Air sure will get a major advantage.

Toyota Sells One-Millionth Prius in the U.S

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 03:08 AM PDT

Japanese automaker Toyota announced Wednesday that it has officially sold its one millionth Prius on American soil and it also reached a couple of other sales milestones in the last six months with worldwide Prius sales reaching two million in October and overall Toyota hybrid sales exceeding three million in March………..

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc announced the one-millionth sale of the Toyota Prius, the world’s first mass-produced hybrid gas-electric vehicle, in the United States. It is the third milestone for Toyota’s hybrid lineup in the last six months that started with the announcement of worldwide Toyota Prius sales topping two million in October 2010 and overall global Toyota hybrid sales passing three million last month.“Since the Prius went on sale eleven years ago not a year has gone by when it hasn’t been the number one selling hybrid vehicle in the U.S,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. “Prius has become synonymous with the word hybrid and as we see fuel prices starting to rise again, it has accounted for more than 60 percent of hybrid passenger car sales so far this year. Prius paved the way for hybrids and while it is still the hybrid leader in sales and fuel economy, I’m proud to say that since its introduction, 13 other auto brands have seen the benefits of hybrid technology and joined the hybrid market.”

The third-generation Prius topped the EPA’s list of the Most Fuel Efficient Vehicles for 2011. It has been named the Best Overall Value of the Year for the last nine years in a row by IntelliChoice and has the highest owner loyalty of any mid-size vehicle for four of the last five years according to R.L. Polk. More than 97 percent of all Toyota Prii sold since 2000 are still on the road.Since it was introduced in the U.S. in 2000, Prius, when compared to the average car, has saved American consumers more than an estimated 881 million gallons of gas, $2.19 billion in fuel costs, and 12.4 million tons of CO2 emissions. In January 2011 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Toyota debuted the Prius v, the first vehicle to be debuted as part of the Prius family marketing strategy. Prius v, which goes on sale in third quarter of 2011, is a mid-size vehicle that provides more than 50 percent additional interior cargo space than the current Prius. In early 2012 Prius will launch two more Prius family members – the Prius c compact hybrid vehicle and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicle.

Download RedSn0w 0.9.6rc10 Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 4.3.1

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 01:55 AM PDT

Just a few minute ago, the famous iPhone Dev Team member @MuscleNerd has released an updated version of RedSn0w 0.9.6rc10 Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1. This updated version brings boot animation (This feature was also added in Sn0wbreeze 2.5.1 for Windows) & enhancements.

Those running redsn0w may have noticed we enabled too many Settings options in some versions of the jailbreak (for instance, what you want your side switch to do, even if you have no side switch because you're not using an iPad). Release rc10 of redsn0w corrects that (you can just run it over your existing jailbreak…be sure to de-select Cydia to avoid package conflicts).

Along the way, we've also added the option to enable boot animations…these animations can be installed via Cydia, but be sure to select which animation to use via the Settings->Bootlogo setting after you've downloaded an animation (and again, you can just run rc10 over your existing jailbreak…be sure to de-select Cydia to avoid package conflicts).

(The boot animation we tested against was "Android Boot Logo". It correctly installs all the dependencies needed to run the animation at each boot).

For who have already jailbroken their iOS device using RedSn0w 0.9.6rc9 can run the latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.6rc10 on top it and select Boot Animation. But, keep in mind to dis select Cydia to avoid package conflicts.

Once done, simply follow the Step 2 onwards in the guide posted here to install "Apple Boot Logo" (aka Animate), and you're well on your way to some animated goodness.

Apple to Bring New Dock Which Supports USB 3.0, Thunderbolt and Display Port

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 12:44 AM PDT

Apple has applied for a new Patent which has been granted by US Patent and Trademark Office. The patent describes what appears to be a new dock connector that can support both DisplayPort/USB 3.0. Apple has been using the 30 pin connector for a while now which brings portability and extendibility to all its products. With this Dock connector, the productivity of the iDevices will be greatly increased.

Right now, only Apple's MacBook Pro supports Thunderbolt, but clearly they expect for the format to take off. What will help take off Thunderbolt in the long run is an in-demand gadget supporting Thunderbolt… and it's easy to see that if Apple allowed their line-up of iDevices to sync with Thunderbolt, there'd be a very clear reason for end users to upgrade.

Apple has been granted a powerful patent that packs quite the wallop. Somehow they snuck a secret patent application through the system for an all-new high speed connector that will combine at least USB 3.0 and DisplayPort. Although the patent illustrates an iPod as being one of the first to adopt this, the patent clarifies that it’s for all future Mac hardware as well.

Apple's patent is for a "Reduced Size Milti-Pin Male Plug Connector" and large describes a smaller 30-pin dock connector, but inside of the wording of the patent, there's explicit mention of new support in the iPod Dock Connector for new transmission technologies.

"Some embodiments of the present invention can provide support for one or more new high-speed communication standards," the patent filing read, which then goes on to cite USB 3.0 and DisplayPort as examples of these standards.

Run Android Apps On Windows PC With BlueStacks

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 11:46 PM PDT

You can run Windows on a Mac using virtualization software layers, it is now possible to do the same with BlueStacks which lets you run Android apps on your Windows PC as easy as you do with switching between Windows apps.

BlueStacks also allows your Android apps to print via the Windows drivers. You can also use apps such as Skype with audio and camera support. But unfortunately, using the BlueStacks you can't get access to or purchase apps from the Android market, due to Google's restrictions, allowing certain devices to access the Android market. But you're still able to buy apps from the recently launched Amazon's Android app store.

If you don’t have an Android tablet or mobile device handy for testing apps this would prove to be a good solution (furthermore Google’s emulator is terribly slow at this point).

If you're an Android tablet user, you'll find the BlueStacks engine useful for allowing you to run Android apps on your Windows PC. As there could be a number of Android apps on your tablet, that you're so used to and you can't leave your hands off them. Therefore, while you're back to a PC platform, you can run them on your Windows.

Toyota Takes Down iPhone Cydia Theme on Apple Request

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 11:05 PM PDT

Toyota started the Cydia Theme advertising campaign about 2 days back via ModMyi's repository. The theme was promoting Toyota's Scion 2011. A corporation was publicly producing content for jailbroken iPhones and Apple didn't like it. Apple has asked Toyota to remove the Scion skin theme from the Cydia store, and Toyota agreed.

The hosts of the file and their own Cydia repository ModMyi received a request from Velti to remove the theme from the jailbreak app store after complaints by Apple.

On the phone, he explained Apple had contacted Toyota and requested they remove the theme and stop the advertising campaign. They (Velti) in turn contacted me relaying the message. The reason Velti listed for the removal request of the theme emailed through our dev portal was “Toyota's making us take it down…” Toyota had agreed to do so to “maintain their good relationship with Apple,” our Velti contact told me on the phone.

This story is not without its contradictions, though. Even though the Cydia folks have proof that the theme was added, then removed on behalf of Velti – a PR agency working for Toyota, Toyota is now denying that Apple complained to them. This directly contradicts what some involved in Cydia say, since they say they were told point-blank by Velti folks that Toyota had gotten pressure from Apple. Kyle Matthews of modmyi.com tells readers that he was called by a Velti guy who told him that Toyota was taking down the theme to keep relations up with Apple. Right from the horse's mouth.

I’ve earlier given the guideline to activate multi-touch gestures on iPad & iPad 2 without Jailbreak using XCode. Now this guideline will help you to activate multi touch gestures on iPhone and iPad 4.3.1 without Xcode.

Instruction:

For iPhone 4 : Navigate to System >> Library >> CoreServices >> SpringBoard.app >> N90AP.plist

For iPhone 3GS : Navigate to System >> Library >> CoreServices >> SpringBoard.app >> N88AP.plist

and add following string

multitasking-gestures

Navigate to var >> mobile >> Library >> Preferences and open com.apple.springboard.plist and add following string

SBUseSystemGestures

Now reboot your phone and that's it.

Do all World Wide Web users know that the battery life of a laptop gets cut in half when displaying flash advertisements?

Well if you know and wondered what to do don’t discourage you have two options in your hand: one to stop it and still view any of them when you feel like or the other one that monitories the flash and lets you kill it anytime you want.

ClickToFlash is the one “antidote against these bugs”. This simple app will do the trick, will replace any flash and leave the word “Flash” on every irritating flash adverts giving the opportunity to click it and view it.

New iPod Touch 5G Image Leaked

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 09:37 PM PDT

New images of prototype of 5th Generation iPod Touch has leaked. MacRumors have got those images. According to the source the front has a capacitive home button, back with markings of DVT-1, and connected volume buttons. The settings also show a 128GB capacity.

Of particular note is the apparent capacitive home button that looks to have replaced the current hardware solution.

On being zoomed the model was found to be running firmware 4.2.1MC14, model MC550LL and connected Volume buttons. The device has an aluminum back as rumored in upcoming iPhone 5 models.

Overall, it’s hard to say too much. Each new component seems easily fakeable using existing images. This, and the fact that the submitter is broadcasting it anyone who will listen makes us think its likely fake.

Checkout the video below.

Artificial Muscle-Operated Arm

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 12:48 PM PDT

AMO Arm pneumatic prosthetic does mind-control on the cheap and the Artificial Muscle-Operated (AMO) Arm doesn’t require invasive surgery. The host human wears a headset that sends brain signals to a chip in the arm that then matches those signals to a database of related actions, triggering a series of pneumatic pumps and valves to move the limb………….

Ryerson biomedical engineering students Michal Prywata and Thiago Caires‘ prosthetic arm is controlled by brain signals, which is a first in medical prosthetics. Two Ryerson University undergraduate biomedical engineering students are changing the world of medical prosthetics with a newly developed prosthetic arm that is controlled by brain signals. The Artificial Muscle-Operated (AMO) Arm not only enables amputees more range of movement as compared to other prosthetic arms but it allows amputees to avoid invasive surgeries and could potentially save hundreds of thousands of dollars. The AMO Arm is controlled by the user’s brain signals and is powered by artificial muscles simple pneumatic pumps and valves to create movements. In contrast, traditional prosthetic limbs which typically offer more limited movements rely on intricate and expensive electrical and mechanical components.Developed by third-year student Thiago Caires and second-year student Michal Prywata, the AMO Arm is controlled by the brain and uses compressed air as the main source of power. The digital device makes use of signals in the brain that continue to fire even after a limb is amputated. Users wear a head-set that senses a signal for example, the thought up and sends it wirelessly to a miniature computer in the arm. The computer then compares the signal to others in a database. The resulting information is sent to the pneumatic system, which in turn, activates the arm to create the correct movement. Simulating the expansion and contraction of real muscles, the system makes use of compressed air from a small, refillable tank in the user’s pocket. The artificial muscle system created by Caires and Prywata is a first in the field of prosthetics and they continue to work on perfecting their system. For example, the pair is working on a design to fit the tank into the arm itself.

Since the device does not include microelectronics and motors, it costs one-quarter of other functional prosthetic arms, which can run users more than $80,000, depending on the complexity of the prosthesis. Other prosthetic arms with a similar degree of control require patients to undergo a complex muscle re-innervation surgery a complicated procedure that costs about $300,000 and is not available in Canada and not covered by the provincial health plan. As the AMO Arm is non-invasive, the period of adjustment for new users is drastically decreased. While traditional prosthetics may require weeks of learning and training, basic function with the AMO Arm can be mastered in mere minutes.“In just ten minutes of practising, a person can pick up the mind-control aspect of the technology,” says Prywata. Moreover, he says, “the AMO Arm will not only benefit amputees, but could also be used as an assistive device on wheelchairs, enabling users to reach things with greater ease. The technology could also be used by the military to facilitate remote operations and in situations requiring robotics. The AMO Arm can currently move up, down, left, right, as well as open and close.”The initial concept for the AMO Arm was developed shortly after Caires and Prywata met at a Ryerson Engineering open house in fall 2009. Each showcased different projects and were impressed with the other’s work. It took a year to develop the software program for the AMO Arm while the actual prototype was created during a marathon 72-hour design session.

Caires and Prywata‘s invention went on to win first prize at the 2011 Ryerson Engineering Competition and took home first-place awards for innovative design and social awareness at the Ontario Engineering Competition in February. The wins at the provincial level qualified Caires and Prywata for the Canadian Engineering Competition, which was held earlier this month in Montreal. There, the AMO Arm placed second in the innovative design category.Caires and Prywata are working to move each finger on the AMO Arm individually. “Independent finger movements require many more sensors,” Caires says. “For example, while not impossible, it’s still quite difficult to grab a key and unlock a door.”In the future, the pair would also like the AMO Arm to sense different materials (e.g., an egg versus a full bottle of water) and adjust the force used proportionately. They have already developed an innovative concept for capacitive sensing which detects different materials prior to contact. The students also have plans to develop an adaptive system, one that will progressively “learn” from a user’s movements and carry them out seamlessly.

Although they are still students, Prywata and Caires are moving ahead on the commercialization of their innovations. They have formed their own company, Bionik Laboratories Inc. (www.bioniklabs.com), and are currently seeking three patents for the AMO Arm and their other technologies. Their recent acceptance into Ryerson’s home of innovation and commercialization: the Digital Media Zone (DMZ) will help them in achieving these goals.Gaining residency in the DMZ (www.ryerson.ca/dmz) was a key move for their business which, while still quite recent has already yielded positive results. “We were really impressed with the DMZ space initially, but didn’t know about all the resources at our disposal and the exposure it would afford us until we got here. The first day we arrived, we were meeting people, including CEOs and within a week we were shooting a piece for the Discovery Channel.” says Prywata.Through their time at the DMZ, Bionik is hoping to build their business and create partnerships and connections with organizations such as the Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI) and MaRS, which fund medical research and development.

RedEye Controls Go Pro

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 12:21 PM PDT

Thinkflood intros RedEye Pro networked home automation controller and RedEye dongle grows up with RedEye pro home automation controller,it allows you to control large portions of your house from your iPhone.ThinkFlood releases the second generation of their award-winning RedEye control systems, including a professional-grade home automation processor and with eight dual-purpose 3.5mm infrared emitter / contact closure sensor ports, all but the hugest of mansions should be taken care of………….

ThinkFlood ,developer of RedEye control systems announced two additions to their platform of solutions for the home.ThinkFlood representatives say the company has been busy developing RedEye Pro, a networked home automation processor capable of whole-house control. The company has also released an update to their original RedEye universal remote control.RedEye Pro allows iPhones, iPads, and personal computers to function as controllers in an array of home automation applications. The RedEye Pro works at a “whole-house” level and can control multiple rooms from a single unit.Designed with input from some of the custom home installation industry’s leading professionals, RedEye Pro offers extensive customization tools for installers. All of this new connectivity enables RedEye Pro customers to interact with a wide variety of equipment, such lighting systems, garage door openers, security systems, HVAC and more. As with existing RedEye products, RedEye Pro makes it easy to control these systems from a single button on their iPhones, iPads or PCs.

RedEye Pro comes equipped with:

  • Eight (8) dual-purpose 3.5mm infrared emitter/contact closure sensor ports
  • Four (4) contact closure relays
  • Two (2) RS-232 ports
  • Four (4) USB ports
  • 10/100 Ethernet (via RJ45 with an internal switch)
  • 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi

Sophisticated home automation solutions have been available for decades, but recent advances in networking and mobile technology enable RedEye Pro to bring these features to a broader market. A new wave of mobile touchscreens, including Apple’s iPad, can replace dedicated controllers, which used to cost thousands of dollars. In addition, web-based technologies and other software advances make customizing these systems simpler and more cost-effective.Even so, integration of these various systems still requires specialized knowledge and RedEye Pro is available exclusively through authorized dealers and installers.“Enterprise system integration is a complicated business dominated by massive software companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, and IBM, which in turn are supported by thousands of boutique consultancies,” said Craig Materick, chief software architect at ThinkFlood. “We are just beginning to scratch the surface of what integration can be in the residential market. Over time we hope to make these systems more widespread, but the industry is still in its nascency.”RedEye Pro is available exclusively through authorized dealers and installers.

ThinkFlood has also updated its original, award-winning RedEye remote control in response to customer feedback. The gen2 unit features a sleek, all-black enclosure, but the real improvement is the addition of an infrared-out port, which provides more flexibility for customers who keep their components in a cabinet or rack.”When we launched our beta program back in the summer of 2009 we emerged from stealth mode with a product that we had designed and developed internally,” recalls Matt Eagar, president and co-founder of ThinkFlood. “Since that time we have made numerous updates to RedEye software in response to customer feedback. We are grateful for the help we have received from our customers thus far, and glad to offer them this update in response.”RedEye gen2 debuts today for $199 and is available at http://thinkflood.com/products/redeye/.
